PCOS in pregnancy and sugar

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and have PCOS.

I know with my condition it’s best to not eat sugar or simple carbs like white pasta, bread or potatoes.

I try to do this - we always eat brown pasta and rice and I mostly only have sugary things on Fridays, like sugary cereal, pastries or a chocolate bar.

But since being pregnant I’ve been craving chocolate, biscuits, crisps and had some garlic bread tonight... I feel so guilty but I just love food and have a sweet tooth. I’m not overweight and do a lot of walking, and overall I have a good diet but I could do better in terms of cutting out unhealthy snacks and white carbs.

Can any other pregnant PCOSers relate? I’m really worried I might damage my baby with the sugar but then I think I’m overreacting and eat the chocolate 😞

Pregnancy can do really funny things to you. I could not stop eating chocolate when I was carrying DD and moved over to dark chocolate as that seem to satisfy the urge. Could you try some better quality snacks like dark chocolate or homemade, low sugar flapjacks?

Hey, I have PCOS as well...my tips are - try and always eat your carbs/sugar with fat or protein to lower the insulin spike. Try to eat them later in the day as our sugar spikes highest in the morning. Exercise/walk after eating if possible.

And take inositol - it's a supplement that can reduce your chance of getting GD.

GL!

@BunnyRuddington that’s a good idea! I might get some dark chocolate in.

I think it’s partly boredom, lockdown and pandemic depression too - I constantly want to ‘treat myself’ to cheer myself up. I think I’m a bit of an emotional eater! Xxx

@georgarina thank you that is a good idea. I had heard of combining sugar with fat/protein but had forgotten, I guess I could have a few almonds at the same time or something when I fall off the wagon.

Do you generally avoid sugar/white carbs completely? I find it hard as I love all that stuff.

I do actually take inositol so that’s good, and also metformin. I started both while TTC both to help me ovulate and get my cycles regular and they worked a treat xxx

Treating yourself with food is a hard habit to break. Could you try a really exciting cup of decaf coffee as a treat/rest instead?

Cafeaulait27 · 21/03/2021 05:50

@BunnyRuddington haha, yeah maybe - that’s a good idea as I do like coffee and am drinking decaf at the mo.

What’s your diet like if you don’t mind me asking? Do you complete stay away from sugar? Xxx

Just went and did the food shop, the only carbs I got were wholewheat noodles, wholewheat bread and sweet potatoes... and the only sugar I got was fruit.

Hopefully I’ll do better this week!

Would be great to hear from other PCOS women about their diet if there’s any out there! Xx
