Amniotic fluid or something else?

Heya, I’m not sure if I’m leaking fluid or not? I’m not leaking in my underwear or anything I’m getting discharge more than anything but I do wee for a long time, I don’t know if I’ve felt any gush of water either I don’t think but I don’t feel like I’ve finished weeing and can be there a while? Is this normal or something I’m not sure how would I know if it’s amniotic fluid or is it just wee?
This may sound ridiculous but it’s my first pregnancy and I’m worrying over everything, I’m nearly 17 weeks now

Just wanted to say too that I’m always feeling wet down there too, and haven’t had much discharge either but just feeling wet all the time

Increased discharge is really common in pregnancy OP. I had LOADS of watery discharge and worried I was leaking too... I wasn't.
If you're concerned then give your midwife a call, she'll put your mind at rest.

physicskate · 19/03/2021 21:29

Sounds very unlikely to be waters. Does it gush when you stand up? Dampness and increased discharge are part and parcel of pregnancy. You might try using liners.

Sounds like it could be uti if you don't feel like you're done needing a wee when you are... might need a trip to the gp!!

It's very easy on mumsnet to lose sight of how rare things like prom are... as people with these major outlier conditions will seek assistance, experience and reassurance as they are (justifiably) anxious when something unusual happens in a pregnancy... but the vast vast vast majority of things that seem weird that happen in pregnancy are totally normal!

Have a google of 'birth rate by gestation.' The ons website breaks it down by week of gestation... I found it very enlightening and reassuring...

Get checked out - only way to be sure.

But, bear in mind: when pregnant, discharge is much more evident, all the time, and is totally different to when not pregnant. So it's very most likely just that.

catlady96 · 19/03/2021 21:46

Thank you every one feeling a bit more reassured by it all! Just this week it’s happened more off and there’s a lot less discharge as in the last couple of days I’m getting wet patches in my underwear and it’s not drying white like discharge usually does, how do I get checked out over the weekend? I won’t be able to tonight now, but what could I do for tomorrow? Thanks again guys

Amniotic fluid would be a continuous leak.
It also wouldn't feel like you need to pee or anything or feel like you're not finished peeing.
You don't feel it apart from it just leaking out when you're, well, in any position really.

Call the number they give you. (usually in your notes or something)
And they'll advise you to put a pad on and lay down for half an hour.
If your underwear is only damp though, I'd say it's probably more likely discharge

catlady96 · 19/03/2021 22:23

@SnooperTrooper12345 brilliant thank you! Yeah I wasn’t too sure what it would feel like, I just feel like I’m leaking but it’s not constant at the moment! I have the Gyne clinics number so I’ll give them a ring tomorrow! Thank you again!

I would go against some of the advice on here and say amniotic fluid isn’t a just a continuous leak. Yes, for those lucky ladies (who I envy) it is at full term when their water breaks.

My water trickled (not a whole lot) at just under 18 weeks and I gave birth to my son the next day.

It didn’t feel like I’d peed, I just knew it was my fluid due to the way it came out (an actual trickle) and it being odour and colourless.

I would definitely get it checked out - for your own piece of mind although I’m afraid sometimes can’t tell you much. My cervix was closed and despite the trickle I had enough fluid.

Good luck

Oodilallygolly · 20/03/2021 01:20

I had this panic at 18 weeks with my most recent pregnancy and googled and googled all day to find an answer. Turns out it must’ve been just discharge but my god I’ve never had so much of it!

catlady96 · 20/03/2021 07:42

@Greenbks thank you for the advice! What do you mean by trickle too? Was it a continuous trickle? Mine is more like it’ll come every now and again it doesn’t last too long but it dries clear it’s not drying white like my discharge has up until now really! So it’s really scaring me to be honest, I’m going to ring my gyne ward today now and ask if I can be seen or something because it’s not right for what’s been going on for me for ages now if that makes sense
@Oodilallygolly thank you! Yeah it’s scary isn’t it, always worrying about something haha but this has freaked me out, I’ve smelt it too and I’m not sure what it smells like, sometimes it smells like wee but then sometimes it has no smell at all, like this morning I went for my first morning pee and my wee was clearly yellow in bowl but on the paper it was clear? So I’m just confused, I wish there was like a clear indicator between water and fluid 😩

I had this yesterday, but in fact had a gush of water followed by trickling of fluid: I'm 18 weeks too.

It was caused by thrush and a build up of watery discharge that "gushed" out of me when I stood up.

But good to get checked

They'll check you and take a swab probably and be able to tell you if it is fluid or not.

Watery discharge is very common around this time though

Greenbks · 20/03/2021 11:17

It was a continuous but gentle trickle for like 3/4 seconds. Initially I thought I’d lost control of my bladder but that’s never happened before and I realised it came from my vagina. I had been having discharge but this was different. It was like water.

I didn’t realise it then but id lost my mucous plug that morning and then a few hours after that my contractions started. My full waters did not break until the very end right before my son was born.

I didn’t know there was a test like snoopertrooper has said- definitely ask about it.

When it first happened I did go to the MAU and they checked my fluid vi scan and fluid was fine. but then I knew it would be bcos not lots had come out for it to be significantly less if that makes sense.

I would also ask about your cervix when you have a scan to see funnelling/shortening etc.

Have you had any more?

Aeomum · 20/03/2021 11:42

I would definitely suggest you speak to MAU to get this checked out. When this happened to me, it wasn't a continuous leak, it was an occasional trickle. Similar to when you're on your period and get gushes every so often and when you go to the toilet.
The only way to know for sure is to get checked

catlady96 · 20/03/2021 16:13

Thanks everyone, I called the on call midwife
And the gyne unit and I had a scan today and the fluid was fine also I’ve had a swab so I should know when that comes back if it was fluid or not, thank you again every one

I had something similar, it didn't feel like discharge because it was so liquid, and there was just sooo much of it! Also, I noticed it especially when I exercised, which made me worry more. I ended up going to a&e (no epu etc here) and they tested and confirmed it was normal discharge. Also reassured me that loads of women go there with the same worry!
