Hi ladies I think I have thrush. Is it safe to use canasten creams in pregnancy? I'm 24 weeks

Yes, I had thrush through most of my pregnancy. You cannot take the oral tablet and only insert pessary with your finger not the applicator. Creams are safe to use x

Thanks so much for the reply. X

I got my first bout at 38 weeks, my midwife said in pregnancy it's often called "thrush plus," great hey! She said to get my doctor to prescribe me the canestan cream so that I wouldn't need to pay for it and could also be given the right dosage. I did that and described my symptoms over the phone and doctor prescribed me the cream to put on 3 times a day for a week, a couple of extra days if needed and then to call back if it hadn't gone by 2 weeks.
Also apparently eating yogurt is good! And going without underwear at night or loose underwear at least!
Good luck!

Get your GP to prescribe it rather than pay for it if you can. Perfectly safe to use during pregnancy.

I had thrush with my first pregnancy and docs would only give me cream for outside which didn't do much. I then had it for a whole year after birth, so would recommend persisting with the doc if it continues. It was a nightmare. Also recommend to take a women's probiotic which is what I am doing now to try and prevent it in my second pregnancy. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for all your replies. I sent my partner to the supermarket last night as I couldn't wait any longer. Started the cream so hopefully that will help quickly. I'm a bit scared using the pessary so haven't used it yet. Do you think it would be ok not to use it and just to stick with the cream?

I just used the cream for a week and it cleared up so hopefully should do the trick for you! The thought of using the pessary while I was so sore and irritated down there did not fill me with any joy.

ReassureMee · 19/03/2021 10:30

Give your midwife or your gp a call if you have any concerns about it, but I was advised not to use the applicator with the pessary and just use my finger and it was safe to use.
If you need any more treatment get it prescribed cos it’s free! Thrush creams etc can be so expensive.

I was worried about using the pesserie but it provides a lot more relief than the cream!

foreverchangingmyname · 19/03/2021 12:38

I had recurring thrush throughout both pregnancies, it was hell.
The pessary is perfectly safe, just use your fingers and not the applicator. I found more relief and cleared up quicker when using the pessary but still used the cream to easy the pain

Thanks so much everyone. I've noticed a slight bit of relief already
