Heavy bleeding 12 weeks

Hello

Looking for advice and to hear from others who have experienced heavy bleeding in early pregnancy and had healthy babies.

I’m currently 12 weeks and have been having spotting on and off since around 6 weeks. After a heavy bleed on Monday I had a scan, baby is fine but sonographer saw some blood in womb which may be causing the bleed and also said placenta is low which may be another cause (although said placenta is often low at this stage).

Has anyone else experienced this in their pregnancy and had a successful outcome? Although the scan showed baby was fine I still feel very worried about this pregnancy. I hate having this anxiety at only 12 weeks as I know I’ve got a long road ahead of me. I’m hoping that reading some positive stories will help out my mind at ease.

Btw I should note my anxiety is largely due to the pregnancy I had last year that ended in termination as at my 12 week scan revealed abnormalities.

I also tried speaking to my midwife about my concerns and she wasn’t helpful at all.

Hey,
I’m currently 17w, and at about 12w I had the most horrendous bleed. Incredibly heavy and I was terrified of miscarrying (previously have had 2 miscarriages so anxiety for me was HIGH).
A scan showed the baby was absolutely fine which amazed me.
Bleeding, for me, only last a few days though. If you’re experiencing pain at all then that may not be a good sign. Midwives, I found, aren’t always that useful in the early weeks as there isn’t much they can do for you. Be sure to talk to your doctor or you can always pay for a private scan to keep your mind at ease.
So many worries during pregnancy, I hope it goes well for you!! X

At my 12 week scan I had a huge bleed. I felt it as I was being scanned and she suggested I went to the toilet, then as I stood up she said you're bleeding. I went to the toilet and passed a large clot, I was sure it was over.

Went back into the scan and she checked, baby was totally fine. Placenta was low. She said she would rescan 4 days later to reassure me (all private as NHS couldn't get nuchal measurement)

I bled heavily for about 4 days, then it tapered to brown for about 2.5wks. I had very mils cramps but no real pain.

At the rescan, baby was again fine and she could see two small subchrionic haematoma.

I had a 20wk scan and the placenta had moved up and the sonographer couldn't see any haematoma. I'm now nearly 28wks.

I really hope all works out for you @Cisco2 I was really lucky as the private clinic was excellent, I rung the MW between the first and second scan as I felt i should and whilst sympathetic they said I'd had a scan so unless the bleeding got worse or I was in pain, they would speak to me at my 16wk appointment.

Hey. I can’t offer any advice but just to say I’ve been bleeding constantly like a period (sometimes worse) for the last four weeks. I have blood next to the baby but despite the blood loss (which has twice left me hospitalised) it hasn’t shrunk. Not sure what to do. Doctors say some people just bleed/ it should work itself out but it’s not reassuring in the slightest. Feel like I’m just waiting for the worst to happen. Take care of yourself x

I had heavy bleeds at 12w and 13w with the same pregnancy. 12w bleed was heavy enough that I was admitted to hospital with them talking about blood transfusion if it didn’t stop. (Thankfully it did!) Some pain too but not loads.

Baby was absolutely fine, born full term and they never did find a cause for the bleeding. I think it was a subchorionic haematoma but nothing showed up on the scan. Midwives were just “oh well, these things happen 🤷‍♀️“

Sorry to hear you're going through this. I've turned to these threads to cling to hope. Only 5 weeks and bleeding pretty heavy. Internal scan showed sack was in the right place but no embryo which is fair as it's only 5 weeks. I've been bleeding and crying all day as I'm expecting to pass the sack. Nothing the hospital can do until 2 weeks to see if pregnancy still exists. Absolutely awful.

How did you get on? Is everything okay? It's such a scary feeling and with hormones & emotional stress it's torture not knowing :(

Hi,

I’m really sorry this happened to you. I had a really heavy bleed at 13 weeks. Never experienced anything like it! Similar to you, I was told my placenta was low but that was normal. I’m now almost 30 weeks and the placenta is still low! Have to be rescanned at 32 weeks to check if it’s moved. There has been lots of different opinions as to what caused the bleed. The doctors have said it was because of the placenta yet the midwives disagree. Once I started bleeding, I bled heavily for about a day then had spotting for a month afterwards.
I know how scary it is, I was an emotional wreck. I still get anxious about it. Just know that it can happen.
Wishing you all the best ❤️

Hi everyone, posting as I wanted to give an update.

Since I first posted I continued to have bleeding for the next 2 days and then spotting which didn’t stop until the day before my dating scan. The scan went well and no fetal abnormalities were seen at this stage. The sonographer kindly went through each observation in detail taking extra time over the areas which have caused as most concern so that was reassuring. Having my husband with me was also a huge relief.
(Last year at the height of covid when I had my last dating scan I was told bad news and had no one with me for support so you can imagine how horrific that was).

So thank you to all those who responded and shared their experiences - really reassured me and gave me hope!

@Sallywag6 how are you doing? Hoping things have improved for you since the last time you posted

Thats absolutely amazing. I had Heavy bleeding all day Friday & Saturday. I was sure I was miscarrying but my sister, who has gone through it said id have severe cramping and would've passed the sack and known. I'm pretty sure I haven't. By Sunday morning it had turned to dark brown and by the afternoon just spotting. I'm still getting very dark spotting but very little. For some reason I'm now thinking it was the embryo planting as when I had my scan the nurse said there's no embryo just yet. She also said could've been a burst blood vessel. I have my appointment on April 6th as by then there should be an embryo & heartbeat all going well. To be honest, I'm thinking it's 50/50 but have to wait 2 weeks.
