What measures are you taking from 28 weeks pregnant? Covid

Good morning,
With the current guidance quite vague, which I do understand is because there is limited knowledge and research.
''If you are 28 weeks pregnant and beyond, or if you are pregnant and have an underlying health condition that puts you at a greater risk of severe illness from COVID-19 at any gestation, you should take a more precautionary approach.''(Gov.uk)

What will you be/are you doing from 28 weeks? I work in early years and so zero social distancing, I know a lot of health workers and teachers are being sent home from 28 weeks. Are you shielding? Working from home? Will you still be visiting friends/shops when restrictions allow? attending things like yoga classes when they open?

Obviously no right or wrong answer I just want to see how others are taking the guidance?

I’ll be working from home for 28 weeks. If I can, I’m planning to probably see family/ friends in small groups in the garden and that’s it. I don’t intend to go to the shops, any classes or restaurants as I don’t need to. I will go to NCT if it’s in person as I see that as necessary xx

I'm 29 weeks now. Have been working from home for a year now so that's not an issue but I have a toddler in nursery so shielding is not an option. I still have to go to my mum's to work on days DC isn't in nursery.

Shielding is a bit of a non-starter really.

Arrierttyclock · 15/03/2021 07:10

I work in a dental hospital and were patient facing until 28 weeks then we work in admin. I'm TTC atm so just keeping an eye out. I'm not sure where I stand with assisting AGP procedures yet

Skymum82 · 15/03/2021 07:15

I'm only early days but I'm worried about this.
I will be 28 weeks in about july.
Which is fine.
September will be difficult as my kids will be a school and by then every one will be free :/. So I have no idea how I will keep my self safe tbh. Unless I don't send them? 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Edelweiss2020 · 15/03/2021 07:17

I'm going on leave from tomorrow, when I turn 28 weeks. I'm a home carer and my company can't provide me any safe working environment so i have to go on paid leave.

I care for my own 2 brothers so will still see them but will be avoiding as many other people as possible apart from the occasional outside meet up/dog walk with a friend to keep me sane!

dropthedeadhorse · 15/03/2021 07:17

I’m 31 weeks. I’m sticking to the rules but not taking any extra precautions. I work from home but dh goes out to work and the kids go to school and nursery so there is not much I can do about that.

As far as I can tell the baby and I are not at massive risk. I have a low bmi, am white and no underlying health condition. The greatest risk is of pre-term birth which if I get past 32 weeks is quite low risk for long term health complications too.

FirstTimeMummy2021 · 15/03/2021 07:18

Once I hit 28 weeks I will be desk/office based and I'm hoping to work from home a few days a week. I won't be shielding as such but we will be being careful about who we see and where we go. I'm also worried about my husband testing positive once I'm in labour and him not being allowed in, so we will probably stay home a lot more from about 36 weeks just in case!

uytp · 15/03/2021 07:21

I will be going on maternity leave a bit early to enable older DC to come out of nursery (later than 28 weeks though). I work from home anyway so no change in actual working arrangements

Won't be seeing family or friends indoors, will see small numbers outdoors when allowed, socially distanced

Won't be going shopping, DH will do that. Won't be going to yoga but wouldn't have done that this time round anyway as I didn't enjoy it last time. Won't be going to hairdresser. Just essential stuff like doctor, midwife, dentist appointments

I will go out and about outdoors with older DC when on maternity leave before birth but will probably avoid busy areas

What I'm not sure about, and don't have a plan for at the moment, is how cautious to be after the birth with a newborn. Eg when to send older DC back to nursery. It's difficult to find out how vulnerable newborns are to covid, although I've seen something from RCOG saying hospital admissions for newborns have been low

Hardbackwriter · 15/03/2021 07:23

I didn't do anything differently from 28 weeks, but I was already WFH. I had been doing what was allowed within the general coronavirus rules and continued to do so, so went to a couple of restaurants during this period (but then we went into lockdown). I was more cautious from 36 weeks because I was worried about needing to self-isolate around the birth, so stopped sending DS to nursery - but that was in January where cases were extremely high and lots of people were worried about whether nursery was safe in any case, I don't think I'd do the same thing now with cases so much lower.

Nat4392 · 15/03/2021 07:32

I work in dentistry and I’m no longer patient facing since 28 weeks but still in work. Honestly the restrictions can’t be lifted soon enough, I’ll be going for as many meals out once they reopen (only 10 days before my due date!). I’ll visit friends and go to shops while I can. Probably won’t be going many places in the early days when baby arrives so I want to make the most of it. As long as you use your common sense, and you’re low risk, I feel perfectly safe.

MissBPotter · 15/03/2021 07:32

I’ll be 28 weeks at the end of June I think, so by then I am hoping cases will be low enough not to have to do too much differently. Obviously will have to see what things are like then but trying to be hopeful, would love to be able to see some friends and family before baby comes along.

Chelyanne · 15/03/2021 07:47

I'll be doing all the stuff I normally do.

Noodles4Me · 15/03/2021 08:20

I work from home anyway, but I certainly won't be shutting myself away. I'll just keep washing hands and wearing a mask and being sensible like I am now. I'm off on holiday end of June at 30 weeks (hopefully, and a UK seaside).

MintGreenLife · 15/03/2021 08:45

I’m 20 weeks now and already work from home. I’m feeling quite worried about the fact that lockdown will be completely lifted around a month before my due date. I’ll probably see friends and family outside, but won’t socialise indoors, go shopping etc. I’ll probably essentially carry on as if still in lockdown to be cautious, just seeing a few people outdoors x

DollyParton2 · 15/03/2021 08:49

I’m 28 weeks tomorrow. WFH so that’s fine but 2 kids in school so no shielding going on. I’m not overly concerned at all really, still go to supermarket for shops etc. The rates are SO low right now I think stressing about it is likely to do more damage than the pretty rare possibility of getting Covid right now.

Flittingaboutagain · 15/03/2021 08:55

Morning. I will continue quarantining my post, wiping down all deliveries, shopping online only and only meeting up with people outside even if the rules permit indoor mixing before the baby comes so that we can more easily socially distance. I will also be working from home. My friend is being sent home on full pay because she cannot work from home in her role and there are no other duties they are prepared to give her that would enable home working.

abeanbaked · 15/03/2021 08:56

Provided you have FFP you are able to carry out AGP, but patient contact is not advised from 28 weeks.
ReassureMee · 15/03/2021 08:59

I work in early years too and wondering what they will do this time for me @ 28 weeks. And there’s literally no way you can socially distance in a nursery and no job you can really do from home.
I’ve a feeling they will furlough me as I’m due in September and that’s where furlough stops I believe, either way they will find a way around not paying me full paid leave.

Iknewyouwerewaitingforme · 15/03/2021 09:01

Flittingaboutagain “quarantining your post”... WTF?! Hmm stress will cause far more harm to your baby than the near impossibility of catching Covid right now especially from your post or deliveries!

MintGreenLife · 15/03/2021 09:06

@Flittingaboutagain you sound like me - we are careful about anything that comes into the house from the 'outside world'. Personally I don't see the harm in taking a few extra precautions, doing things like online shopping and wiping down anything that comes into the house only takes an extra few minutes. I can't say I'm stressed about it myself, I just like to know I'm doing all I can to limit my risk!

shittingthreeeyedraven · 15/03/2021 09:07

I’m 31 weeks now and am working from home as I’m a teacher and can distance in my classroom. Other than that, just following rules, almost everyone I know is a teacher so testing regularly. dh and dc are still at work/nursery so not much chance of isolating even if I wanted to.

I am weighing up vbac vs elective cs and may well isolate/get dh to work from home for the last week or so in case of contact then he won’t be allowed into the hospital! But by may I’m hoping things will be even more positive than they are now

pumpkinmamma · 15/03/2021 09:09

I’m 30 weeks, currently furloughed but will be returning to work within the next couple of weeks to set up ready for reopening (I manage a non-essential retail store).
No other risk factors for me except the pregnancy so I hope I can continue to work, will probably try to minimise contact with customers though.
DS still attending nursery, DH doing the food shop etc so mostly at home but I have been getting the odd takeaway coffee and deliveroo. I’ll definitely see my Dad in
his garden when that’s allowed, might even get to see him indoors too before baby arrives and that’s honestly what’s keeping me from insanity at the moment

RunnerGirl123 · 15/03/2021 09:20

Nearly 19 weeks and I'm hoping things lift to plan so that I can enjoy shopping for baby, cinema and restaurant dates with my OH and seeing family and friends both indoors and outdoors - normal life - before little one arrives. Of course I'll be sensible, washing hands / wearing masks where appropriate. I'm also planning to keep going into the office past 28 weeks until my mat leave starts providing I'm well enough to keep up my commute. This will of course also depend on guidance from RCOG, but if we're "safe" to return to normal as others will be, then I will.
My other half can't work from home and can't social distance at work due to the nature of his job, so there will always be a risk of it coming home. In the last few weeks, I imagine I'll be limiting who I see, where I go a bit more but I don't plan on locking myself away unless guidance says so.

Opticabbage · 15/03/2021 09:37

I'm currently 25 weeks and had been hoping to enjoy restrictions lifting with everyone else as I'm desperate to enjoy some normality before baby arrives. However, I have been to a couple of big shops over the last couple of days and they feel a little too risky to me. Overcrowding, massive groups and people not respecting distancing. So I will probably stay away from shops, but still see friends and go to restaurants.

BlondePotter · 15/03/2021 09:43

I'm 28 weeks today and no plans to change what I've been doing. I've been WFH for a year and will just keep working until the birth.
Main shop gets delivered but I go into other shops briefly for top ups. And will be happy to visit restaurants given they will be outdoors only for most of the remainder of my pregnancy.
More concerned about catching it from hospital and midwife appts than a 5 min visit to Tesco to be honest.
