What measures are you taking from 28 weeks pregnant? Covid

Good morning,
With the current guidance quite vague, which I do understand is because there is limited knowledge and research.
''If you are 28 weeks pregnant and beyond, or if you are pregnant and have an underlying health condition that puts you at a greater risk of severe illness from COVID-19 at any gestation, you should take a more precautionary approach.''(Gov.uk)

What will you be/are you doing from 28 weeks? I work in early years and so zero social distancing, I know a lot of health workers and teachers are being sent home from 28 weeks. Are you shielding? Working from home? Will you still be visiting friends/shops when restrictions allow? attending things like yoga classes when they open?

Obviously no right or wrong answer I just want to see how others are taking the guidance?

I’ve got a holiday booked for when I’m 34 weeks, UK based. I have two other kids and they won’t get to travel or see anyone if I stay at home the whole time and I’m not going to ruin their summer. Hopefully by June things will be much easier and I am low risk. I have never quarantined post or shopping so will not be starting that.

Donotfeedthebears · 15/03/2021 11:28

I’m WFH but I have been for a year. Seeing my parents indoors on the 29th March, they’ll be part of my childcare bubble a couple of weeks later and they’ve been vaccinated so happy to break “the rules.” Not seen them since December.

Never quarantined post or wiped down shopping.

I'm 29 weeks and stopped working in my patient facing role last week. I'm on special leave until my maternity starts as I can't work from home/they can't provide me anything to do from home. I definitely don't quarantine my post or wash bag handles etc. I do my food shops, go to boots, b and q etc. I've basically just kept myself busy, stuck to social distancing and stopped watching the news. I keep in touch with my friends and go for walks etc which is allowed! I'm not stressing, what's the point. If you sit at home worrying about catching covid it'll cause you so much stress and anxiety, I'd be a wreck by the time baby arrived.

Sansa87 · 15/03/2021 15:22

I’m 32 weeks and have been medically suspended since 28 weeks. I’ll be taking annual leave from 36 weeks to take me up to maternity leave.

I do still so the food shop with OH because I would go crazy not leaving the house at all. I also try to walk daily.

I’m not sure what the official guidelines are. When rule of 6 comes our it will just be my immediate family, & oh’s immediate family. They’ve all had their first jabs, and will maintain social distance in the garden

VoyageInTheDark · 15/03/2021 15:39

I'm 29 weeks. I'm a SAHM and DH works from home but DD is in preschool and I don't want to take her out as it is really beneficial for her. We're also going away for a few days in the UK in May as we didn't go anywhere last year and I'm desperate for a change of scenery. We'll just be doing outdoor things and having takeaways.

I'm still going to be careful but I don't want to stay at home all the time and get depressed

Chelyanne · 15/03/2021 16:43

I want my youngest 2 to get chickenpox Grin

RubyRainbow16 · 19/03/2021 13:19

I am currently 23 weeks and I also work in early years in a baby room. I have spoke to my work and from 28 weeks they are putting me in the kitchen with the cook to help out - avoiding all other staff. This still worries me so I've decided to take holidays and mat leave from 31 weeks so I can keep safe at home!

2021mumma · 19/03/2021 13:29

My work have said wfh will stop beginning of July. I will be 30 weeks then all being well. I am going to refuse to go back and to continue wfh till maternity leave starts as central London location and don’t want to get on cramped tube and trains. Hope they accept this.

GrandTheftWalrus · 19/03/2021 14:18

I'm 32+3 and I'm just doing the same as I have been all the way through the pandemic. I'm still at work and will be till 37 weeks.

I don't quarantine my post. That's bonkers

AegonT · 19/03/2021 15:08

I'm 34 weeks. I've been working from home for a year but popping in occasionally for things that can't be done at home. Since 28 weeks I've said I won't go to the office at all. I only go out to take my daughter to school, to visit my mum (she's in our bubble), for a walk, for medical appointments or vet appointments for the cat. I don't go to shops or go into cafés/up to kiosks to get takeaway coffee - my husband does that. I don't meet one person outside. I will consider relaxing this and seeing people outside in April as cases are getting a lot lower here.

Nesski · 19/03/2021 15:14

I'll be 31 weeks when shops open and I will be running (literally, I am so excited) into JL and mamas and papas to look at prams, we have bought nothing. We have booked a day mid week to go though to avoid bigger crowds. Will go to friends' gardens, outdoor restaurants and then I'll be 35/36 weeks when we can go indoors, to which I will to see family and friends. You can say I'm pretty blaise about it all but genuinely, as long as I don't lick strangers I think I'll be ok.

aug2ftm · 19/03/2021 15:18

I’m a secondary school teacher in Scotland and the Union fought the council back in January for 28 weeks+ to be WFH which is still current guidelines and I’m hoping will remain in place after the Easter Hols when I hit 28 weeks.

maloney123 · 19/03/2021 15:20

@Nesski hey, how did you manage to book an appointment? When I check JL website it just says temporarily unavailable for the in store appts!

maloney123 · 19/03/2021 15:20

Is anyone considering a baby shower?

MoscowMuse · 19/03/2021 15:22

Im 25 weeks at the moment and already full time wfh. I will continue getting supermarket deliveries / avoiding the shops but i do intend to make a couple of trips to John Lewis / Mamas & Papas to test out a few items before we buy (really don't want to buy a buggy without testing in person as DH and i are both tall). Our NCT class is in May and we've already been told it will be online. I am desperate for a haircut and to start swimming again when leisure centres reopen, but i think I'm going to see what the cases are like before deciding whether to go ahead. We won't be having anyone in our house but am planning on meeting a couple of friends / family members outdoor for food (again, subject to case level).

NinaMimi · 19/03/2021 15:51

I’m over 28 weeks and I haven’t changed how I behave. I worked from home before the pandemic so don’t have issues with work and I only really have contact with my partner. We go out walks and I still go to the supermarket sometimes. I think if I shielded in a little flat it wouldn’t be healthy for me.

Amethyst2502 · 19/03/2021 16:36

I work in garden centre retail and was furloughed from January but have gone back to work full time this week. I'm 28 weeks today and am still customer facing but am just taking the same precautions as I have been the whole time, wearing mask all the time, sanitising regularly etc.

When shops and outdoor hospitality open I will be 31 weeks and am quite happy to visit them. Also looking forward to be able to sit in gardens and socialise with friends as obviously for most of my pregnancy have been stuck in the house!

Nesski · 19/03/2021 18:15

@maloney123 no appointment for JL, just for mamas and papas, going to try everything out in general in JL after getting taught a few things in m&p hopefully!

Marvelwife123 · 19/03/2021 18:35

I don’t have any underlying health conditions so I’m carrying on as normal. Just doing what I have been doing, I’m quite cautious anyway even when not pregnant. I’m wfh with my job so I don’t any risk from that.

I do feel for people in early years as kids can’t socially distance and must be worrying if you have an underlying health condition

jmildsss · 22/04/2021 20:31

I also work in a nursery, I'm currently 17+3 weeks, I'll be 28 on the 5th July. I've spoken to my manager today and she seems to think that it doesn't apply to me and that I'll have to start my maternity early instead of going on suspended pay. I don't know if this is right or not?
RubyRainbow16 · 22/04/2021 21:18

@jmildsss
I also work in a nursery and I am 28 weeks pregnant now. My work tried saying this at first too but after ringing ACAS they were told that I must be 'non people facing' therefore they needed to find something else for me to do. They've put me in the kitchen and the office doing bits and bobs until I go on my maternity leave. I would rather suspended pay, but the guidelines say that as long as they can find you alternative work you are fine to carry on. Make sure you stick to your guns!

jmildsss · 22/04/2021 21:50

@RubyRainbow16

I did think that I was right, my work has an office person and a full time chef so there's no alternative work for me, so I think that is why my manager is trying to say otherwise. I'll give it a few more weeks and then possible call ACAS too. Sorry for all the questions but do you know if the suspended pay is 100% because that's another thing my manager doesn't agree with

Clio91 · 22/04/2021 22:17

My daughter was stillborn in October at 37 weeks last year because I caught covid. I’m a nurse but chose to work in the office instead of home from 28 weeks because I believed there was no risk to my unborn baby and I was low risk.
Covid obliterated the placenta and then my immune system attacked the placenta causing blood clots and fibroids and stopping oxygen and she died.

I don’t say this to scaremonger but I wish I had the information I have now last year and then I would of stayed at home and just kept her safe.

The guidance is if you cannot socially distance in your job then you must be sent to WFH or furloughed.

Please don’t take any risks like I did as honestly the aftermath is heartbreaking.

She was a perfect 6lb 14oz and now our lives are changed forever and I have to carry that guilt with me.

Peaplant20 · 22/04/2021 22:40

@Clio91 that’s absolutely heartbreaking I’m so sorry for your loss. Were you yourself very poorly with covid? They haven’t seemed to document any link between covid and stillbirths I hope they do some more research on it soon xx

Cantbebotheredtothinkofaname · 22/04/2021 22:51

Oh @Clio91 I’m so sorry for your loss. Flowers

I was going to say that I’m 28 weeks in July and because my toddler is at nursery there’s not much point shielding but your post has made me rethink my plans. Hopefully because it’s summer I can try and spend more time outside.
