Is the name Louie definitely a male name?

I know the name Louis could be unisex but only Louie? I keep searching but not 100% clear. I just try to find a name which couldn't be unisex, such as Taylor / Ashley ect. I read it's a french name but I kinda like it.

Louie is classed (by some) as a unisex name. But I would NEVER call a girl LOUIE.

That's as bad as calling a boy Tracey or Shirley (even though those 2 names are unisex too.)

Never heard of any girls called Louie. So I wouldn’t say it’s unisex at all. It’s a male name in my opinion.

Goneback2school · 14/03/2021 18:15

Someone i follow on insta has a little girl Louie, it suits her.

Louis is a male name. You're thinking of Louise or Lois I think. Those are female.

However, nowadays anything can be unisex so it hardly matters what they traditionally were.

Louie has been unisex for a long time now, but if it's a girl Louie or Lou, it's usually because it's a shorter version/nickname.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/03/2021 18:16

Louis and Louie are boys names

Louie could be a nickname for Louise or Louisa...

AWhisperWillDoIfThatsAllYouCan · 14/03/2021 18:18

Although after googling, turns out Louis is sometimes used for girls in the US. I never knew that!
I know quite a few women named Louie but never met a female Louis.

yuyubooboo · 14/03/2021 18:18

I know of a girl nicknamed Louie but her full name is Louisa.

I'd definitely assume Louie is a boys name. And I really like it

littlepattilou · 14/03/2021 18:20

@Createausername6

How about calling her Louise, and calling her Louie as a pen-name? (If you want Louie for a girl...

BurningGubbins · 14/03/2021 18:24

I have a female relative called Louie. She's is her 60s. Not a common name, even where she's from, but not a shortened version or nickname either.

Wanderlust20 · 14/03/2021 18:39

You're thinking if Lois I think! Louie (or Louis) definitely a boy's name.

StiggyZardust · 14/03/2021 18:42

My grandmother was called Louie. She was born in the 1890's. I think it's lovely.

Wanderlust20 · 14/03/2021 18:42

Louis is the French spelling BTW but pronounced the same as Louie Smile

lotsofdogshere · 14/03/2021 18:45

My lovely gran was Louisa. Always known as Louie

GloryHunter · 14/03/2021 18:48

Louie was my late grandmother's middle name, she was born in 1906

AWhisperWillDoIfThatsAllYouCan · 14/03/2021 18:49

@Wanderlust20

Yeah, in France the S wouldn't be pronounced but Louis is also a separate name from Louie, and you pronounce the S.

Createausername6 · 14/03/2021 18:49

Thanks everyone! Sorry if i forgot to put i actually looking for the boy name, as we expect a wee boy 😊 just some sites even had the Louie version described as a female name, but others said it is only a male name. Nowdays so many names unisex even i would think that's only a boy or girl name 😶 but in this case im just afraid maybe 5-10 years later turning out this name could be given to girls more than boys if it is unisex? 😔 or things like this not really happening and im just paranoid? 😁

Taylor and Ashley are unisex though...

AWhisperWillDoIfThatsAllYouCan · 14/03/2021 18:50

@Wanderlust20

For example, Louis Litt in Suits.

Choice4567 · 14/03/2021 18:50

I’m not following what your concerns are

AWhisperWillDoIfThatsAllYouCan · 14/03/2021 18:52

In the nicest possible way, you're being a bit silly.

More and more names are becoming unisex. They aren't moving from boy name to then being solely a girl name.

Name your kid whatever name you like. It doesnt matter a single bit if the name is unisex or not. People are not going to start saying, "oh, that's a girls name now".

user1493494961 · 14/03/2021 18:53

I knew of an old lady whose name was Louie, but short for Louisa.

Createausername6 · 14/03/2021 18:53

Okay thanks. 🤗
