Scan photos

I understand times are difficult but I've had my letter for my first scan (first baby). It states that scan photos are £10 each!! Never have I ever heard anyone has paid so much for their scan photo. Do you think this is an unreasonable amount? Or am I expecting too much from the NHS?

For me it used to be a £1 per photo (2 yrs ago) but with this pregnancy they have been free.

CtrlU · 13/03/2021 09:06

£10!?!

I don’t remember paying anything for my scan photos but that was 8 years ago

Warrickdaviesasplates · 13/03/2021 09:09

Ours were £12.50! Two years ago they were £11-ish and nine years ago they were £8.50.

I do think it's a bit of a rip off but especially as DH couldn't come into my 12 week scan with me I felt like I really should buy them so he could see the baby.

OurChristmasMiracle · 13/03/2021 09:09

The scan is to check that everything is okay the photos are a nice little extra that doesn’t have to be provided at all. However I do think £10 a photo is a lot especially when so many peoples incomes have been reduced due to the pandemic.

Cafeaulait27 · 13/03/2021 09:10

I’ve had my letter through and it didn’t say anything about costs for scan photos! We’re bringing cash just in case!!

Poppiesway1 · 13/03/2021 09:10

It’s varies enormously around the country. Where I am they are £3 (They were £1 22 years ago!) in nearby hospitals they are £5 and £7.50. I expect London costs are even higher. The cost of the thermal paper is quite expensive and we’re running at a deficit on costs for scan pictures so ours will be going up when things are “back to normal”

Pinkywoo · 13/03/2021 09:11

Mine were £5 in 2019, £10 is a lot!

SmidgenofaPigeon · 13/03/2021 09:12

Yeah we just paid £10 for a print of three separate images printed out onto one strip. I actually wouldn’t have

MotherPiglet · 13/03/2021 09:13

Mine were £4 in 2018 and still £4 now. Where are you based OP?

SmidgenofaPigeon · 13/03/2021 09:14

Sorry didn’t finish!

I actually wouldn’t have minded so much because I thought it was going to be proper quality photo paper but it’s very flimsy and poor quality!

Mingasauros · 13/03/2021 09:15

We didn't pay anything. Only paid for photos for our first in 2015 -£5 for 3

SmidgenofaPigeon · 13/03/2021 09:15

This was in Queen Charlotte and Chelsea (which is near White City, not Chelsea)

KindnessCrusader · 13/03/2021 09:15

In 2007 it was £10. I was on my own, had £20 a week for food, was already panicking about the car park charge the later my appointment got and could have cried.

HaNNaHC92 · 13/03/2021 09:17

In my current pregnancy, the letter with my scan appointment stated £3 per scan photo. When I had the photo given to me I was given 3 different photos on the same strip so effectively £1 each.

MsSquiz · 13/03/2021 09:17

I think ours were £10 for 3, but we were given 5.

At a private scan, they send you a link to a password protected album of scan photos and videos that you can print off yourself - but obviously you have to pay for the scan

PrettyLittleStars · 13/03/2021 09:27

Wow £10 is a lot! Mine have either been £5 or free!

Tibtab · 13/03/2021 09:34

My 12 week ones were free but the 20 week ones were £10 for 3 photos. The money all goes back to the maternity unit.

Anonomous · 13/03/2021 09:36

Thanks all. I was thinking £10 is a lot. I'm based in the Midlands.
@OurChristmasMiracle I understand that is what the scan is for but when this is our first baby and my OH is not able to attend I would like him to at least see a photo of our baby. If he was allowed in I wouldn't be too bothered but as this is our first and the first time I will be seeing the little one I would like a memento.
I have never known anyone pay £10. Sounds like it differs up and down the country and that each hospital can charge what they feel. Like most of you hopefully it will be a reel of photos and not just the one for that price. Having to pay to park is bad enough. Think we will end up having a private scan at this rate just so my OH will actually get to see baby and hear the heartbeat, all the things first time parents want.
Thanks all!!

£5 here but haven't had to pay (had about 5) as either DH not allowed to be with me which means they give you them, or there was a trainee having a go too. £10 is a lot if you're on a low income

ivfbeenbusy · 13/03/2021 09:38

That's pretty standard however I've never paid - the sonographer usually gives you a couple for fee ( the £10 charge is because you'll get people who take the piss and who want 20 copies to give their nearest and dearest)

SoonToBeMrs91 · 13/03/2021 09:38

The scan photos can be expensive, my trust charges £10 for 3. But because of coronavirus they have been giving them for free, seen as father cannot be in the room etc. I would take cash just in case, but you might not have to pay for pictures.

Anonomous · 13/03/2021 09:39

@KindnessCrusader
I'm so sorry to hear that. It's not something we should have to be worried about especially at what should be such a joyous occasion!
Can see why so many people are anxious about the whole experience and even more so this past year when you can't even have a loved one/ family member in with you for that extra support!

@SoonToBeMrs91
Thank you for that information. Maybe it will be the same here then. 😊

Our hospital accept contactless payment only. So make sure you also have your card just in case.
Anonomous · 13/03/2021 09:46

Yes I understand that people may take the mick and want a whole reel. I only want one as it's our first and the OH cannot attend due to covid restrictions. I don't mind copying it and giving family one of them. Just think £10 is rather expensive, especially, as it's been said, if on a low income. I wouldn't mind giving a donation. Just don't understand why it varies so much in price up and down the country.
