I understand times are difficult but I've had my letter for my first scan (first baby). It states that scan photos are £10 each!! Never have I ever heard anyone has paid so much for their scan photo. Do you think this is an unreasonable amount? Or am I expecting too much from the NHS?

I will add that our sonographer did give us 3 freebies but you can’t see much on them 😂 a foot or a hand perhaps! Nice for us but no one else would make head nor tail of it. To get the better images we paid the £10. But if we couldn’t have afforded that then at least we would have had something.

Twizbe · 13/03/2021 09:50

With my first baby they were free. With my second it was £5 for 3 I think. They didn't charge us in the end because the photos were terrible lol. My DD hated being scanned and just didn't play ball.

saffire · 13/03/2021 09:52

£2 each ten years ago. Was charged for two, but they gave us about 12!
£10 seems expensive- if you wanted to spend loads then surely you'd have a private scan? I'd think as long as they covered costs and a little extra for time, then people are more likely to spend more!

Cornishmumofone · 13/03/2021 09:54

I paid £12 for 3 in Southampton 4 years ago.

PurBal · 13/03/2021 09:59

We paid £10 for 5 but there were only 2 different shots, so really £5 each with copies.

kensue19 · 13/03/2021 10:03

I was shocked to learn we had to pay £3 per photo as they were completely free with first baby at a different hospital. However, on the day I was given quite a few and all for free. They were poor quality printing compared to ones I'd been given in the past, but still nice to keep.

sashh · 13/03/2021 10:07

It can depend on the brand of U?S machine, the papers are all expensive, they need to be to show the detail needed for diagnosis. They are also thermal paper, not the kind you can stick into a printer at home.

The department might not have had the choice of machine and therefore might have to budget more for the paper.

Actually now I think about it, maybe it's something that could be crowd funded? A fund so no one pays for the pic but is asked to donate if they can afford and made up of external donations.

Thanks again all. Looks like I'll just have to wait and see what the day brings and the mood of the sonograher haha. And take cash/ cars with me just in case. Thanks again

I had scan at the EPU a couple of days ago and got 2 pictures for free?

ivfbeenbusy · 13/03/2021 10:43

If you are in the West Midlands the following tend to give the first 2 or 3 free

Heartlands
Solihull
Birmingham Women's

They have a machine in the waiting room where you can pay the £10 for extra copies

Youwhobego · 13/03/2021 10:45

I’ve never had to pay for scan photos

Anonomous · 13/03/2021 11:01

Mixed responses from all so I'll just have to wait and see what they decide to do on the day.
@ivfbeenbusy I'm not at any of them 🙈

We paid £5 for 3 with babies 1 & 2. Baby 3s were free at the same hospital!? Confused Seems theres no rhyme or rhythm - £10 is a lot for one photo!

Carolina24 · 13/03/2021 11:51

Bloody hell! Mine were free and I was given about 8 each time

Chelyanne · 13/03/2021 12:12

Our trust charge £6 for pictures.
Mine were quite blurry so the sonographer gave me them for free though.

doritodiva · 13/03/2021 14:01

They said that on my letter but when I got there I had them all for free as I had to go in on my own. I had three scans in the end and had six printed off at one time!

ThisMammaCat · 13/03/2021 16:41

I'm in the Midlands also. At my 12 week scan I got three for free- the sonographer said they were doing that to make up for partners not being allowed to attend. I'd taken a tenner with me as I was aware that they are usually not free. Kept the tenner in my bag (it was an important tenner, my oldest had slipped it into a birthday card for me and I wanted to spend it on something special) and at my 20 week scan it was £10 for three pics, with the money going to a charity. The sonographer gave me 4 though, because I'd asked for a shot of baby's face because my 8 year old would like to see how creepy they can look. You may find the tenner is for three photos but the letter isn't clear about it.

crobo87 · 14/03/2021 16:35

I had the same. Had my scan letter last week and it said £10! I was shocked, I feel it's a lot for a photo.

MeadowHay · 14/03/2021 16:40

In 2018 our hospital gave you one free one and any additional ones you wanted were £3 each. I had a scan at EPAU which DH wasn't allowed to attend and they gave me a free photo then, not sure if antenatal scanning will be different as partners are allowed to attend those here.

toolatetofixate · 14/03/2021 16:43

I've never heard of paying for anything through the NHS, except for certain dental procedures.

Are any of the PPs in Scotland?

BirthChoice · 14/03/2021 16:44

We had to pay for photos but at the 12 week scan the card machine was broken and the photos were so bad at 20 weeks they wouldn’t charge us. Then I had to have growth scans and the dr just printed a load off every time, I had so many photos by the end I didn’t realise that I’d lost a load in my car until I found them under the babies car seat. Baby was a toddler by that point. Blush

Chanel05 · 14/03/2021 16:48

I had my 12 week scan in March 2020 and 20 week in April 2020. Letters said photos were £5 each but antenatal department didn't actually charge as dh wasn't allowed in.

Waitingforbabypage · 14/03/2021 16:48

I didn't pay anything for my 12 week scan but it was £8 for 4 photos on my 20 week.

MimiDaisy11 · 14/03/2021 16:48

Out letter did say about a donation but they didn't bring up the donation and there was no obvious place to give the money so ended up getting them for free.

alexio · 14/03/2021 17:09

What?!
This is my 2nd pregnancy and had loads of scans with both and never been charged for pictures with any of them on NHS and had pictures given at every scan.

The only time I've paid was at a private clinic £50 for gender scan and about 10+ pictures were included

I'm in Scotland
