Not getting a 20 week scan..?

Second baby, I had a dating scan and I'm not booked in for the next one (my last appointment) until 28 weeks.

Kind of freaked out..I thought the point of the anomaly scan is to have it before 24 weeks? Is this normal, has anyone else had this?

Have you called your midwife?

WalkingMeAway · 11/03/2021 19:27

No that’s not normal. Where are you based ? Seems there’s been an oversight. Give your midwife a call.

FlashesOfRage · 11/03/2021 19:28

Sounds like a clerical mistake 💐

Chase it up with your midwife ASAP xx

georgarina · 11/03/2021 19:29

@Wondermule @WalkingMeAway yep I talked to my midwife, she confirmed the scan dates for me and said I would have fewer appointments as it's second baby.

I thought it sounded strange but it's not until now that I've realised it seems wrong.

I'm pregnant with my second currently and had a 20 week scan. Are you in the UK op? They booked my 20 weeks scan at the 16 week appointment I believe

Moominmiss · 11/03/2021 19:33

Definitely not right op. I’m on baby number 4 and still have a dating scan, 20 week scan and a growth scan at 36 weeks!

I’d go back again and demand you get one. If anything were to be picked up at 28 weeks that’s then awfully late and even more traumatic than having it picked up at 20 weeks!

Thesearmsofmine · 11/03/2021 19:34

YeH that’s not right. You have less midwife appointments but still have a 20’week scan.

traintrain · 11/03/2021 19:36

Definitely not right OP. Talk to pals if you get nowhere with the midwife.

SnooperTrooper12345 · 11/03/2021 19:40

That's not right. I'd ring the hospital.

You have fewer midwife appointments, yes. But not less scans

stuckinarutatwork · 11/03/2021 20:25

Definitely seems wrong (I've previously worked in antenatal booking offices). Until relatively recently, the 20 week scan was the only scan offered in our local NHS trust; dating (12 week) scans were only introduced here about 10 years ago.
But the 20 week is most important and yes, should be done before 24 weeks.

Mummyof2Terrors · 11/03/2021 20:28

I'm second baby and so far it's been

Booking
12 week scan
16 week phone call
20 week scan
28 week appointment (not yet booked).

It's an oversight on the 20 week scan.

alexio · 11/03/2021 20:49

Currently 38 weeks with my 2nd:

Booking app 8 weeks
12 week scan
16 week midwife app
20 weeks scan

And various other midwife apps and growth scans along the ways but you should def be getting a 20 week scan regardless of 2nd pregnancy

DuggeeHugPlease · 11/03/2021 20:53

Are the growth scans pretty standard? I only had 12 and 20 week scans in both pregnancies but have seen a few comments about routine growth scans.

Not routine. Some hospitals offering 36 weeks scans as part of a new initiative but really isn't widespread. You'll only get growth scans if they suspect a clinical need.
PlanBea · 11/03/2021 21:28

I'd contact the hospital, the midwife didn't have anything to do with my scan bookings. It sounds like "the next appointment is at 28 weeks" is the midwife getting confused thinking you're talking about appointments with them, not scans.

Hyppogriff · 11/03/2021 21:33

You should still have an anomaly scan

LuciusMalfoy · 11/03/2021 21:37

Had 20 week scans with all of mine so it sounds like it's an oversight, OP

Dollywilde · 11/03/2021 21:39

Absolutely wrong. 12 and 20 the bare minimum.

Chelyanne · 11/03/2021 21:40

You need an anomaly scan at some point between 18 & 21wk.
You should have a midwife app at 28wk with repeat bloods normally.

I'm on baby 6. My anomaly scan was booked for 20wk at my dating scan, already have several other appointments scheduled for several things. The growth scans are not given as standard, I have a history of big babies and my consultant said I'll only be ordered a growth scan if I measure ahead on fundal height when midwife checks it.

BendingSpoons · 11/03/2021 21:41

Is it just that she won't see you for a routine appointment until then and someone else books the scans? Can you ring the scanning dept and ask?
