Hi all! Hope everyone is doing well! Just a quick one, my 20 week scan is Wednesday next week do you have to ask for the gender or do they ask you? I'm desperate to know if it's a boy or girl

Just tell them straight away you'd like to know?

Moominmiss · 11/03/2021 12:40

You’d need to ask, they won’t just tell you as they aren’t checking specifically for that.

Also just be prepared that some trusts have a policy not to tell you as they can’t guarantee that what they tell you is correct and they don’t want any comeback if it’s wrong.

Good luck x

Thanks guys. I'm aware it's a silly question but it is my first baby so I guess I'm allowed a few lol

The sonographer asked me if I wanted to know right at the start before she even started the scan. She then started and (within about 4 seconds) it was very obvious we were having a boy!!

The sonographer told me she needed to know because if you don’t want to know, she would tell you to look away at the appropriate time!!

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

My first 2, I had to ask, my last one, she asked at the beginning if I wanted her to look.

Better to ask at the beginning anyway

gemgem1404 · 11/03/2021 13:08

Mine asked me at the very start if he could see the gender would we like to know and then told us at the very end after he'd reassured us of all the organ functions and measurements being normal Smile

Edelweiss2020 · 11/03/2021 13:19

Ours asked at the start and then when she was looking in that area announced it, though even without her saying it was obvious that he is a boy!

She did say obviously they can't guarantee it but with ours she was pretty certain! I'd ask when you go :)

Our sonographer asked. But when we said yes she sighed and said "oh good, because it's obviously a boy" and then pointed out his penis and testes.

Grognonne · 11/03/2021 13:37

I think you need to ask, we didn’t and weren’t told, and they didn’t ask us if we wanted to know. It wasn’t obvious to us as the focus was on the organs blood flow etc.
