Fetus is almost 2 weeks too small at first ultrasound

Hi

I went to the doctor today who did my first ultrasound. I was supposed to be pregnant exactly 8 weeks but on the ultrasound fetus was 4.5mm long and doctor said that this means its 6weeks 3days old. She said that fetus had heartbeat that is consistent with 6w3d not 8 weeks also. Should I be worried? This is my first pregnancy and after reading all of these horror stories I'm really worried about that.

don't worry.
having a strong heartbeat is good.
embryos don't always implant right away and fertilisation of your eggs can be days after having sex.

Early scans can be off by up to a week just due to the tiny sizes. Add to that that you may have ovulated later in cycle than you expect it could be normal. Was it transvaginal? This is more accurate so could be a factor?

I wouldnt worry its perfectly normal to be earlier than what you expected, going by my LMP is a totally different date to what i was scanned at, there is a difference of 6 days

Don’t stress! I’ve got a difference of 12 days!! When I had my early scan I was sure I was further along going by my LMP but they was adamant I wasn’t, and every scan I’ve had so far has been on track with what date they gave me.. I’m 10+6 now baby has a strong heartbeat and I saw them flipping around on the scan the other day when I had a private scan done as chose to do the harmony testing x

Don’t worry, really don’t. There will be plenty of things to worry about for the next several years. Just focus on the positives here: you’re pregnant, there’s a heartbeat. That is what counts.

I got remeasured at 20 weeks and told my baby was due 10 days earlier than my calculated. I said “ no, it’s impossible, I know when we had sex” and they insisted. Oh guess what, I was induced at 42 weeks, which by my reckoning was just a few days over 40 weeks.

I’m honestly not convinced by these dating scans!

Howshouldibehave · 10/03/2021 08:23

I had a scan at 6+3 to be told there was something there but it was between 4/5 weeks generation-no heartbeat. I went back 2 weeks later to see a healthy 8+3 baby there. I didn’t quite ever understand how-surely it wouldn’t be that wrong?!

Good luck

Best thing you can do is get another scan in a couple of weeks.
If baby shows good progress with growth then it has a good chance, most likely a late ovulation. It is really hard playing the waiting game but it's just what you have to do in early pregnancy. Good luck

I will not go for scans so early again. My last pregnancy I had one at 8+3, baby measured 7+4 with a strong hb (only movement was the flickering of the hb). I mc baby at 9+3, 1st time I'd mc after seeing a hb on a scan. Had my scan at 12+3 with current but baby measured 13wk and was very active. Currently 17+1 and baby doing well so not all doom and gloom.

Thanks everybody, this is little bit comforting but still feel "down". English is not my first language so my writing might seems funny sometimes

At 9 weeks I had a bleed but had to wait until my 12 week scan to check all was ok, turns out I was only 9 weeks then so 3 weeks out! had another scan when I was actually 12 weeks Dates can get moved at the start but as long as baby is healthy there's no need to worry

Had my doctors meeting on Friday but no good news. Missed miscarriage.

Sorry @Kagu1994 . The same thing happened to me. It's difficult because when you see these threads you don't want to be the downer who says that when everyone else is saying 'don't worry it'll be fine' when it wasn't fine for you. I've also been that person scouring threads looking for hope.

I hope you recover soon and go on to have a healthy pregnancy in the future Thanks
