How do you stop people from guessing?

I am only just pregnant (4weeks) and I want to be completely off alcohol, at least for the first trimester. My husband and I have a lunch date with another couple on Saturday, who aren't really friends but kind of an ex-colleague and his wife. How do I not drink without them guessing that I am pregnant. Especially as ever since DS was one or so people have been asking if we planned to have a second, to which we have always said yes, so I don't know how I can successfully handle this situation? I would rather they not know as it might hurt my prospects of getting work.

nightowl · 29/10/2004 05:00

or detox?

I've used the antibiotics one. Though when I did announce my pregnancy a few weeks later all the friends who had been at the "I'm not drinking, I'm on antibiotics" meal said "oh we knew you were pregnant when you weren't drinking!" Are they trying to say something, d'you think?

I used the anitbiotics one too. Evidently 2 people said they guessed but they never said anything till after. One guessed cos I went off the atkins diet and I said I was just having a healthy eating one and they thought that sounded so unlike me that alarm bells must have rung.

I used to always be the one going to teh bar (handily fitted in with my need to visit the ladies every 6 seconds anyway) and would be drinking G&T or similar without the G. Or would get non-alcholic lager (vile tho). Or would use the excuse of a large night out the day before.

DH drunk for two (or three)!! We'd both have glasses of wine and he'd surreptitiously drink from both which meant he ended up getting plastered (esp. the first time as he got in a panic about having to make sure he drank both !)but at least it stopped people guessing !! At work I stopped going to evening do's which gave the game away to one friend (although she didn't say at the time) but it was less obvious than not drinking !

Congratulations by the way!!!!

Driving
Anitibiotics
Detox
Dieting
Hangover from night before
Up early the next morning so needa clear head

All pretty good excuses if you leave the explanation short and sweet.

I got a positive test a few days before my birthday and had to stay off the drink through my own birthday party! The antibiotics excuse worked for me - but as I was single and it was very unplanned no-one would have suspected, and I think I looked pretty ill from the stress of it.

beansprout · 29/10/2004 11:27

I don't drink anyway and so have to deal with "why aren't you drinking?" a lot! I tend to find that if I am clear and don't make a big deal out of it then it is ok. I think the antibiotics one is good. Whatever you do, just be confident and don't apologise for it, just act as if you are more than happy with your OJ or whatever. Frankly, it is not anyone's business what you do or don't drink. Those people that make out you are spoling their fun by not drinking need to have a look at that....! Good luck!

AussieSim · 30/10/2004 10:38

All that worry for nothing. These people had such good manners that they didn't comment on my not drinking alcohol or coffee or even ask the standard question about were we planning No. 2.

If only there were more well mannered people like this around than the first 12weeks would be a snack.

Thanks for your ideas anyway.

I was worried about this last Xmas as we have an annual cheese and wine where everyone gets plastered. I had 2 full glasses of wine in front of me all night and everyone else was too pissed to notice I was sober next morning I was getting texts asking me how my hangover was!!!!
