Weight gain in first trimester

Hi ladies!!
So i struggled with maintaining a healthy weight before I was pregnant so now I'm worried about gaining a lot of weight whilst pregnant.
I'm now just over 7 weeks pregnant and in 1 week I've gained 4 pound.
I'm having very bad nausea and all I'm eating it a bowl of cereal (special k or cheerios) water melons and potatoes and im not eating that much of them. I drink water most of the time. Maybe a glass of milk now and again so I don't understand why or how I've gained 4 pound in one week.
Anyone else's weight shooting up in the first trimester??

I'm not pregnant now (baby is 14 weeks) but in all my pregnancies I've gained most in the first tri. I too get very sick and very nauseous and have to eat to stave it off (even if I'm sick anyway). There's no point worrying about it. You have to do what you do to function!

Two things:

  1. Pregnancy weight gain isn't linear - you can gain a huge amount of water weight at the beginning.
  1. If it carries on happening like this (v v unlikely) talk to your midwife, but it will probably be fine.

4lb gain in a week will be mostly water retention. Your digestive system also slows down in the 1st trimester and this can account for short term gain. I wouldn't worry too much in the 1st trimester though, eat what you can to get through the early symptoms then once you are feeling better you can focus on healthy eating (with a few treats of course).
I struggled to cook in the 1sg trimester as it made me so nauseous, I moved to convenience foods that I could just pop in the oven and leave. Now I'm 15+1 and cooking from scratch more again so much healthier.

Hey my weight has absolutely soared and I’m only 7 weeks. I don’t have much sickness or nausea, and I haven’t been changing what I’ve been eating (I’m pretty sure!). I have been incredibly bloated/sluggish since about day 1 however. I am hoping it’s mainly water weight / the joys of slow digestive system. I don’t know about you but before being pregnant I used to be so sensitive to piling on the water weight around ovulation - I could put on 4lbs or so overnight!! I’m definitely retaining water this time as I can’t actually get my rings off my hands as easily already. I’ve put on around 5lbs so don’t worry it’s definitely not just you! Making me nervous of what’s to come if this is the first few weeks - pre pregnancy weight was just a couple of pounds into the “overweight”
category so I’m keen not to shoot up so quickly!

Your body is probably storing most of what you put in rather than burning it as it might think resources are scarce and it knows it’s got a pregnancy to support.

Have you had your booking appointment? You could mention it then if not.

I gained at first in first few weeks but I’m now 10 weeks. Between weeks 8 and 10 I’ve actually lost 7lbs in two weeks. I think it’s water retention at first and then for me the nausea has taken over and I can’t eat any of my usual snacks.
I did have a happy meal from McDonald’s for tea though. Not healthy at all but I could stomach it so small victories.

My BMI is about 25 so I’m hoping I lose a little more if I can, before I start gaining again but I think we just need to do what we can to keep ourselves sane, and function!

@Laura199214
Same - I'm 8+1
I walk about 35-50k a week and eat healthily (whatever I can stomach) - up until this last week when I'm craving jelly beans and donuts and can't face any veg at all - and I have put on weight each week regardless.

My BMI is already a bit high so I'm freaking a bit about gaining a lot if this carries on! My boobs are massive too :*(

Thanks for starting this thread and good luck with the pregnancy xx
