Hyperemisis- will I get it second time round?

Hi everyone, hope some of you poor fellow sufferers can help...

I had hyperemisis with ds, now 2.10, from week five until about week 36. Was admitted to hospital 6 times and on a drip, scary drugs etc etc.

Now I am pregnant again (nearly five weeks) and so excited too! But am a bit worried that it will happen again this time. However, even if it was bloomin inconvenient/I lost weight during my pregnancy/was generally a right royal pain in the arse, I loved being PG and it didn't put me off for a second when we decided to start trying for another.

If you had it during one pregnancy, did you suffer during subsequent pregnancies? Just wondering. Should I expect my indegestion to turn into full scale vomiting every 20 mins or is there a chance that it won't happen again do you think?

Hiya Minkus

The truthful answer is that nobody knows- sorry! It varies a lot, as indeed do the causes which is why nobody can say. My personal experience is that I have had HG 4 times, but only requiring hospital admission with the first (meds with all the rest), I am now 19 weeks pg with my 4th and last.

have you had a look at this website? It ahs handy information on it- there's also another one based in the USA which ahs some good stuff on it and personal contacts, but as I was the info person for the one I linked to, if you have any questions or need support just CAT.

I had it with both. This will be my last pregnancy can't do it again.

Like peachy said though there's no rhyme nor reason to it so you may be lucky. But get prepared just in case

PeachyCosmicExplosion · 04/11/2007 15:44

Yep mine too, dont know why I could get past it with others- not this time!. Just couldn't, probably having the others to care for as well that did it.

Pixiefish · 04/11/2007 15:45

I had it with both pregnancies

cazboldy · 04/11/2007 15:57

only had it with my girls, and the first was much worse than the last. was hardly even queasy with the three boys.

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 04/11/2007 18:39

I had it with all three pgs but first two were girls and much worse

This one is a boy and was slightly milder.I was lucky that mine stopped at 20 weeks each time though but still went through the hosp admission and drip nightmare

Hmmmm so I'd best steel myself just in case- do remember Dr saying last time "Now Mrs. Minkus don't fret there isn't a guarantee that you'll get it in future pregnancies, although you're more likely to than someone who didn't have it first time round"

Had forgotten that website Peachy, thanks for offer of support. What does CAT mean? Have a feeling it may be something ...gulp... technical

Funny about hyperemesis being worse with girls. Have hyperemesis and pregnant with a girl and spookily have 3 acquaintances with hyperemesis who have 10 girls between them!

PeachyCosmicExplosion · 05/11/2007 16:21

Its not statistivally worse with girls- I have 3 boys! If you start to look at big numbers like the callers we used to get it really spans across all groups- gender, age, etc.

I had very severe sickness with dd from weeks 5 to 24. I was on meds to control it but they were just on point of admitting me when it suddenly cleared up.
This pregnancy I didnt have any sickness until week 7 and then felt generally awful with it for approx 3 weeks but was only sick a few times a day rather than constantly. Since then haven't had sickness, just lots of heartburn!
Like you I loved being pregnant despite the sickness first time around and this time is quite a novelty to not feel weak and like crap right the way through!

Peachy - oh ok - just a coincidence then.

Nice to hear that Clairey!
