pill question

This is probably dead easy but can't find answer. Finished pack of pills on Friday night. Didn't want a break and meent to carry on but forgot to start new pack on Saturday. Started Sunday. I take it I AM still protected since had taken all of previous 28 pills? ie - it's not like missing a tablet in middle of pack? Or is it? I know this MUST be easy. Thanks

I'm no expert so what follows is probably toss but I suppose you would have had a 7 day break and you didn't: you had a one day break, right? Therefore to my mind, in theory yes, you should be OK since you started taking them again way before the 7 day break was up and only had a one day break instead. So I reckon you're OK but don't rely on this, I don't want to be responsible for an unplanned pregnancy! And I haven't taken the pill in a looooong time so my memory is hazy but this is just my logical interpretation.

Just thought, do you usually have a 7 day break and not take it for 7 days? Is this right? If so my theory might hold water.

Tinker · 30/09/2002 23:31

www - that's my thinking as well. I'd be covered during my 7 day break so the one day break should be covered as well. Should think before I type really!

No, I never think before I type at this time of night, not enough time! Hope we're right!

Or I'll be posting on the Expecting in 2003 thread!!!

Were you hoping to avoid a period Tinker? If so, and you haven't started one, I would use condoms for the next week as you are only protected that week because you are bleeding, practically no-one gets pregnant on their period. But as you are not having a period then there is a slight possibility that you may get unlucky (or should that be lucky, I dunno?).

hmb · 01/10/2002 18:51

As I understand it, you should be ok. You can have a 7 day break in taking the tablets without having an egg ripen and be releaced (the pill free break that is your 'period'. Taking less of a break is not a problem, taking a longer break of 8 or more days can let the egg 'slip out' as it were. The most 'dangerous' days to miss a pill (regarding unwanted pregnancy)are those that lengthen the pill free time, and not those that occur in the middle of the packet. But you should always use an alternative form of contraception if you are ever more than 12 hours late with taking a pill.

hmb - thanks for that, makes sense to me.

Rhubarb - I think bad timing as opposed to unlucky!

Posted this another thread but thought I might try here as well.

If you forgot to take your pill, got pregnant but DIDN'T KNOW you were pregnant and, thus, continued to take your pill until it became obvious you were pregnant, would it do any harm?

It's a theoretical question only but has always mad me wonder.

Thanks

There are no recorded cases of any harm coming to a baby as a result of taking the pill in pregnancy - and it isn't an usual situation at all. If it did cause birth defects or anything the pill would have been banned long ago.
