My husband does not agree with my name choice spelling - what shall I do?

I am having a baby girl and we decided on the name Isabelle a while ago. Or rather, I decided on Isabelle, my husband decided on Isobel. Only recently - when a friend of ours asked which spelling we were using - have we discovered that we have a problem!

We are both digging our heals in, though I have to say, husband is not looking like he is going to back down on this one. He says he'd rather we choose another name. But I don't want to!!

So, the baby is due at Christmas. What do you think I should do? Relent and have the spelling 'Isobel'/dig MY heals in and see where it gets me/agree to pick another name. (I don't dislike the name Isobel, I just haven't got used to it yet)

Any opinions please!

Lovely name choices, I have Freya and my sister has Isabelle

How about going completely nuts and having Yzabel

Put your request to DH flame, response was raised eyebrow followed by quizzicle look

No, no go for Isabel - Isabelle sounds/looks too French (would have to pronounce it with the emphasis on the last syllable), and Isobel is too warm-coloured, unlike cool, clear Isabel (sorry am synaesthetic with words)

My xp's next girlfriend after me was called Isabelle. I nicknamed her Isamoche.

fortunecookie · 04/11/2007 21:21

She was french, btw.

I love Isabel though

my friend's baby is called Ysabel and I think that is lovely and really original.

wasn't trying to get at you, gemy. Just speaking generally. I realise you're just trying to agree a spellign

lilolilmanchester · 04/11/2007 21:26

Lovely name! Personally, would go for the most common spelling otherwise your DD will spend a life time of her name being written incorrectly. That said, i have a very common name and some people still get it wrong!Hope you resolve the issue, it's one of the names I really liked but couldn't persuade DH, regardless of spelling!

HumphreysCorner · 04/11/2007 21:32

I picked Isobel for DD2's middle name and it was only when MIL asked why on earth we had spelt it that way (cos we did!) that I realised all the other ways of spelling it. 'Tis a nice name which ever way it is spelt.

I have an Isabel - when my DH phoned everyone with the news he actually spelt it Isobel down the phone to my parents and Isabelle down the phone to his (poor bloke was shellshocked I think!)! We've spent several weeks "putting people right"! Not sure why we decided to spell it Isabel - we just liked it that way!

I know an Isabelle, an Isobel, and Isabel and an Ysobel!! How many spellings can one name have!!! I like the Isabelle spelling most.
