Medical vs surgical abortion

I'm 7 weeks pregnant (so will be at least 8 by the time of the abortion) and I'm trying to decide whether to have the medical or the surgical option.
Has anyone got any experience with either? I suffer from anxiety and I hate being sick, does the medical one make you really sick?

Sending massive hugs. Do you even get a choice with it being so early? Mine was 18 weeks so had to be medical and our little man looked like a little baby.

I did vomit once during but I did eat a massive lunch in hospital which was probably not the best plan! Not everyone vomits though and they can give you plenty of anti sickness as it doesn’t matter about drugs crossing the placenta anymore.

Speak through the options with the consultant. Xx

I’ve had two surgical abortions. I felt fine on waking. You have a heavy period for about a week afterwards. I preferred the surgical option so as not to have deal with it mentally as I have trauma issues. I actually felt great after both abortions as I had been so sick with pregnancy nausea. I did feel very low afterwards (emotionally) which I think is a result of the hormones as I did 100% want to end both pregnancies, so be aware that you might feel weepy etc.

Hi @someonepleasehelpme88
I had a medical last year, I had the option and medical sounded easier, but they normally scan before hand and weren't offering due to covid, so had to sign lots of documents to say I take responsibility if anything goes wrong as I'm consenting with out a scan. Everything was fine! But just be warned they tell you it's like a heavy period, it's not it's much worse, I'm telling you as I wish someone had told me, thought something was wrong! Everything was fine tho and it doesn't last very long, make sure they give you some good pain relief and some give you anti sickness too! I didn't get anti sickness but wish I had! I had diarrhoea with it too and it's honestly not very pleasant! If this is what you choose just make sure you have someone with you!
Sending lots of hugs and love!
This wasn't intended to scare it's just I wish someone had told me what to actually expect rather than a leaflet and told "it's like a heavy period..."
hope everything goes okay 💜💜💜

I had a medical at around 6 weeks, and for me it really wasn't much worse than a heavy period, over very quickly and no nausea/sickness, cramps were strong but manageable. I was on my own throughout (my choice) and really was very straightforward.

I was also with a friend whilst she went through a medical - I think she was slightly further on (maybe a week or two). She clearly felt a lot more pain during it than I had, and was eventually sick, but then she felt better very quickly after that. It was maybe an hour of serious discomfort/pain for her.

Neither of us were offered a choice for surgical, but I personally was grateful that I could go through it at home.

Thank you everyone. I've been speaking to Marie stopes who have been lovely and when I told them about my anxiety they said if I want to come in for a surgical with sedation, I can. I don't know if that sounds like the better option as then I won't have the worry of waiting for it to happen and being really aware of it all - I'm just not sure I could cope with that.

I had a medical and had no sickness. Felt a bit of nausea during the process but I was already getting a lot of nausea with the pregnancy. I have a fear of being sick so I was really anxious. I just didn't eat a lot before hand either. Bleeding was heavier than a heavy period but it was still manageable. Pain wasn't bad as I took pain killers as soon as I felt a slight bit of pain so it never came to much. You'll be okay. Personally I'd rather go through another medical rather than a surgical but that's just my opinion. You'll be okay, take care x

Thank you. I have a phobia of being sick too. Do you mind me asking how far you were? x

I was around 9 weeks so I was only a few days out of needing to get a surgical one, which I really didn't want. Luckily I was allowed the medical. The thought of being put to sleep scares me but I can see why a lot of ppl would prefer that, to have it all over and done with quicker

Meredithgrey1 · 19/02/2021 16:47

I also have a phobia of being sick and had a surgical abortion last year at 5 weeks because I was too anxious to have the tablets.
I just had local anaesthetic for it (no sedation) and it was fine, painful cramping during and for maybe 10 mins after, then just very mild cramping for the rest of the day.
Different methods will obviously work for different people, for me reducing the risk of being sick was the only thing I focused on when deciding. But I also appreciated the benefit of it just being done quickly (I was in the actual surgical room for less than 10 mins). But obviously I had to go to the clinic rather than being able to stay at home which some people might find more comfortable.

Hi new to this I found this thread and not sure if it’s the right place to post but could really do with some help...I went on two dates with a much younger guy at Xmas. On both occasions we slept together and were not careful, he seemed so genuine and told me I was perfect and made for him, he even stayed at mine Xmas morning saying how he didn’t want me to be on my own. He ghosted me a week later. I thought I may have been pregnant so I kept trying to contact him in a casual way to see where he was at , but after several unanswered messages I finally plucked up the courage and called him. He completely shut me down so I didn’t tell him what I suspected. I did a test three weeks ago and it confirmed my suspicions I’m pregnant. So last week I finally plucked up the courage to text him. He’d blocked me, I was distraught. So my friend offered to speak to him on my behalf in which he has now said that if I don’t get an abortion he’ll tell the police that I’m harassing him. What do I do? I’m so frightened because I’ve had trouble in the past with exes and the police. And I want to keep the baby. Am I being selfish? I’m just so frightened and at a loss.

Youve told him your pregnant, hes blocked you and said he doesn't want to know. Block him from your end and you do what you want to do. Your very very unlikely to get in trouble for harassment for trying to tell someone youre pregnant. Dont let him use that to blackmail you. Hes talking out his arse. You dont need him anyway, you got this xx
