Metformin side effects

Hey lovelies,

Has anyone who has GD been prescribed metformin and found they made them feel ill? I feel so nauseous despite my morning sickness being mostly gone for couple of weeks, I've had headaches recently and have an upset stomach.

Has anyone else had this problem with metformin? If so what did you found helped ease the symptoms?

Tia

Hey, I am on metformin but started before pregnancy, for me it’s due to pcos (which can go hand in hand with insulin resistance). I mainly take it to reduce my pcos symptoms and to keep my cycles regular (it’s worked a treat) and I’m now 6 weeks pregnant.

I remember feeling nauseous and having headaches for the first two weeks, I was advised to take it at night to minimise these effects. It was fine after a few weeks once my body got used to it and I now take one 500mg in the morning and one in the evening, after food. I hope this helps xxx

Exact same story for me with @Cafeaulait27. If you’re taking the standard metformin, maybe try to change to slow release. I’m taking Glucophage and it took me like 2-3 weeks to get used to it but I’m fine now. (Started before pregnancy. I’m 8+4 now.

Are you on the slow release tablets? If not you could ask to switch, there are less side effects.

It's notorious for side effects - the pharmacist sat me down and had a Serious Conversation about them when I had GD. I had the slow release ones, don't know if that made a difference but I didn't have any side effects from it.

@Chri89 I’m on glucophage too x

Hey guys, thanks for all your responses, glad I'm not imagining these side effects haha! I think I'm on the standard ones as they don't mention being slow release at all. I have to take 2 500mg a day at the moment. I have an appointment with the consultant next week so I'll keep an eye on it and if I need I'll definitely ask for the slow release ones! I was taking one with lunch and one with evening meal, could that possibly be too close together?
