Glucose in urine

Had my 31 week midwife appointment today and I had glucose in my urine (++) for the first time. I remember having this once in one of my other pregnancies but it was the morning after I'd eaten a load of haribo so that explained it as it was clear the next time. This time I can't think of what could have caused it. I have no other risk factors for gestational diabetes. Did anyone else have this as a one off in their pregnancy?

I had no risk factors for gestational diabetes either but still had it. Have you had a glucose tolerance test?

No, they only do the GTT in my area if you have risk factors.

Yes, I did.

Can't remember what week appointment it was detected though. I think it was post GTT (which I had passed), so probably a similar gestation. I had been busy at work in the morning, so all I had time to eat prior to the afternoon appointment was some fruit gums. It was chalked up as an anomaly, and it didn't happen again. In the end, while baby was on the large size for her gestation, at no point did I develop GDM.

I would ask the midwife just to double check. It could just be an anomaly but would be good to rule it out.

No risk factors either but I still have GD. Picked up at 16 weeks after I had glucose in my urine.

You should be screened for GDM if you have 2+ glycosuria even on 1 occasion or 1+ on 2 or more occasions as per NICE

It may well be nothing but I would get screened for GD anyway. You don’t need to have any risk factors to develop it, and they should test you at this point. If they really won’t you can get it done privately but you shouldn’t have to.

It’s just one of those things where you hopefully don’t have it, but if you did you want to know.
