Hi all...
I'm 7 weeks pregnant and struggling with certain foods and drinks (making me feel nauseous) I want to try and make some smoothies in my blender.

Does anyone have any good recipes to suggest?

One banana
3-4 strawberries
scoop of protein powder (I usually use a chocolate one)
tiny bit of peanut butter
a touch of chocolate sauce (like the freedom one) if you weren’t using chocolate protein powder

I then filled it most of the way up with water (I have a small ninja knock off blender thing) and wizzed it up.

Good luck, the aversions are horrible and I’m just starting to make progress at 9 weeks

I tried to drink smoothies in the first trimester and I just couldn't - my body would only tolerate carbs! Normally though I just follow the nutribullet "recipe" of half green veg, banana, top up with frozen and fill with water.

Fave is prob:
50% spinach/kale (buy big bags and keep frozen)
whole small banana
top up with frozen mango/papaya/pineapple (something yellow so doesn't turn smoothie brown)
stem ginger (opies jar - keep in fridge)
Squeeze of lime
Top up with water/coconut water

The only thing I have to buy each week is the bananas which I find a lot easier (and cheaper!) than buying loads of fresh fruit.

Papaya and pineapple is not recommended in pregnancy.

I like blueberries, strawberries, banana and flaxseed. Sometimes I add natural yogurt but mostly not

Smoothies got me through the morning sickness. If I wanted a full meal, I'd blend oats, peanut butter, any fruit, and water or milk - tinned coconut milk works especially well - and ice (unless the fruit is frozen). Bananas are quite sweet if you are in the mood for something sweeter, and berries are more refreshing and tart.

You can also add spinach for extra nutrients - you can use quite a bit without even tasting it.

Some combinations I used a lot:

  1. Frozen berry + cocoa powder + milk + sometimes a bit of sugar
  2. Brownish banana + peanut butter + cocoa powder + ice + oats if I was particularly hungry. This one is also nice with coffee if you're having caffeine!

@BabyC21 pineapple is definitely fine. No science to back up the claims - it's an old wives tale. I've done a lot of research after recurrent MC. Pineapple does contain bromelain which can, in theory help to bring on labour, but it's in very small amounts. You'd need to eat loads to have any effect at all and most of it is in the core and really who eats that bit? If you are particularly concerned you could have tinned pineapple - the bromelain is destroyed by the canning process.

Papaya is more nuanced to be fair. Ripe papaya is good for you. Unripe papaya has risks - I did in fact avoid papaya to be on the safe side in 1st trimester but had forgotten and should've made that point so thanks for flagging.

I actually think the salmonella risk from the spinach in my recipe is probably highest... but I took the view that I couldn't avoid all fresh foods because of that risk.

Simple one

1 banana
1 apple
Yoghurt (flavoured or plain is fine)
Honey
Top up with milk

Apple pie one
1 apple
1 small carrot/half a carrot
Handful of oats
Sultanas
Pumpkin spice mix (or whatever you have out of: Cinnamon, ginger, allspice)
Top up with milk

Berries/spinach one
Handful or 2 frozen berries (leave them frozen or microwave for 30 secs with a bit of water)
2 handfuls fresh spinach
Banana
Top up with milk or apple juice

Summer refreshing one
Watermelon
Apple
Strawberry ice cream
Fresh mint leaves
Top up with milk

Oh sorry forgot - apple pie needs honey as well. And if your berries are unsweetened add some kind of sweetener for the berries one too.
