False positive or false negative?

Been feeling a bit "off" the last few days, took a cheapo ebay test which looks positive? Then another from the same multipack which is negative. What is more likely false positive or false negative? I know obvcourse the only way to know for sure is another test but not possible tonight and suppose to be having lovely valentines dinner with hubby but this will play on my mind reckon until I know for sure.

Thoughts? Whats more likely?

When did you take these tests and do you know how many days past ovulation you were?

The chances of a false negative are greater than false positive, especially early on in the pregnancy. It all depends on what time of day you took the tests.

If you took the positive one with your morning urine and the negative one later in the day, chances are you are pregnant but your urine was more concentrated in the morning and was able to pick up the hormones.

If you're unsure I would suggest getting a first response test as they pick up earlier than most other tests. Online cheapies tend to not be as strong.

Good luck and fingers crossed for you.

@mondray Thanks, not sure when I ovulated, I'm breastfeeding my 6mo so not had regular periods Shock both tests were done within 5 mins of each other around dinner time.

A false positive is rare. Unless you're looking at it after the time limit in which case its invalid.

As PP said if your positive was earlier in the day than the negative then it makes sense

I had a false positive (wasn’t ttc so very relieved when it wasn’t true). I then brought a million pregnancy tests all negative. From what I read if you accidentally get any liquid / pee on the upper part of the test then it can cause a false positive so now I always pee in a cup and dip rather than mid stream as there’s less splashing 😂

Bing765 · 14/02/2021 19:52

Did you use dip the test in the same urine or did you wee twice? It's likely to be a false negative if you weed twice so quickly. The only way to really know though is to test again.

holidayhelp123 · 14/02/2021 19:53

First one was held mid stream (sorry if TMI) second was 5 mins later but was dipped

If you only held for 5 minutes and those tests are not very sensitive then I would say the second test wouldn't be reliable. Dip again with first morning wee tomorrow for a more accurate result, but I would be inclined to believe the first test.

mondray · 14/02/2021 20:00

So chances are that the second one was a negative as it was your second wee within a very short space of time.

This makes me more confident that you are probably pregnant.
If you have the patience hold in your wee for a few hours and dip it. Then you can test as many times as you want on the same urine to be sure Smile

Done another last night with one of the cheap ebay ones as thats all I have at the moment and it was positive, have just done one first urine of the day which is negative? I'm so confused! Planning on buying a test from boots today to hopefully figure out wether I am or not!

Not sure what is going on, had a negative yesterday morning followed by a positive yesterday afternoon but have woke this morning to bleeding. Not sure if its been a chemical or wether its just been 2 dodgy pregnancy tests that have showed positive 😥

I've had a couple of negative tests, but still no period and based on previous pregnancies I still think there's a chance I might be pregnant. The uncertainty's so hard isn't it - good luck!!!

Only just read the comment about the bleeding, doh. So sorry x
