Cyclogest/progesterone pessaries - brown spotting/pain?!

Hi all,

I am in the very early days of pregnancy, only just missed my period. I was prescribed cyclogest pessaries, vaginally, twice daily because I’ve had a number of miscarriages. Since using them on Thursday, I developed brown spotting when I wipe, and some low pain/crampiness but it seems lower than normal period pain and not very intense.
Anyone experienced this or has any suggestions?
Obviously worrying it’s another miscarriage but hoping it’s just the pessaries as no red blood or severe cramping and my tests are still dark
Thanks!

@Strawberry08 congratulations! I'm the same boat as you, but I don't have any spotting. I have had very mild on off cramps and as you describe they feel slightly lower down. But on the patient leaflet the side effects can be cramps from what I've seen! I think a lot of people can have spotting due to them irritating the cervix. Could you try them up the other way? It's so hard not worry.

Ah congratulations to you too! I am going to try them up the back bottom starting tonight 😂 and see if the bleeding wears off. Pain has actually subsided now which is great. I have to say it really does feel like my cervix is irritated! It feels uncomfortable and it’s low down (doesn’t feel like uterus pain). So fingers crossed nothing major.
How far along are you?

@Strawberry08 yes try that for a few days and see if it helps! I'm am very early and 4+4 today. Having had previous miscarriages the worry is something else.

MeadowHay · 13/02/2021 19:59

I can't comment on the pessaries but cramping and spotting is common throughout the first trimester and doesn't necessarily mean anything sinister is going on. However with your history I'm not surprised you're anxious. I'm about 6 weeks with my second and I've had small amounts of spotting and cramping on and off since implantation before my period was due and I confess I get a bit tetchy about it myself as I didn't have anything with my first. However I have done some research and it's apparently really common. All the best.

@Fawn68 I am also only just past my missed period so very early too. Aw bless you, I do totally understand. When you want it so badly, every twinge or pain you get anxious about whether your dream is going to get shattered!
But I just try and tell myself that what will be will be so there’s no point stressing. Good luck with baby number two!

@MeadowHay ah thank you for your response. Yep you’re right. And also common around time period is due apparently so I’m trying not to worry and just take every day as it comes!

I take them for incompetent cervix and have always used them rectally apart from last week used them vaginally, after a week I've gone back to rectally so much nicer, no discharge and doesn't irritate the cervix x they can cause slightly cramping and slightly bad bowels but most of those symptoms can be normal pregnancy joys, but normally settles within a week or so xx

Strawberry08 · 14/02/2021 08:13

@boymum88 thank you! That’s really great to know.
I did it rectally last night and have had no bleeding and no pain so I think that’s the way to go.
I feel very pregnant today, I feel like I’ve been hit by a train and very nauseas. Oh the joys but so worth it 😊

Hi all, I know this is very late to post but I am 6+3 and I've had brown spotting on and off for the last week which is making me terrified as I didn't have it with my first pregnancy. I am taking progesterone pessaries rectally as it is an IVF baby but I'm so nervous in case it's going wrong. Did you all have good outcomes please? Many thanks

LittleThang99 · 05/10/2021 16:02

Hi sunflower 😊 I’ve just read your post and I’m having the exact same thing, it’s totally freaking me out. Did you discover what it was? Xx

Becky280592 · 23/12/2021 08:29

Hey
I'm having the same thing with the progesterone pessaries! Minus the spotting, I'm getting cramps and twinges! It's so scary I've had 3 miscarriages on the past so every sensation I get Its giving me the worst anxiety! Fingers crossed everything works out fine! X

Strawberry08 · 31/12/2021 18:52

@Becky280592 I gave birth to my little boy 10 weeks ago after 4 miscarriages and when I started this post, up to 12 weeks I had spotting and cramps. I found out from the consultant that the pessaries can do that (especially vaginally), try up the other way Blush that helped for me.
Best best best of luck I am sure everything will be fine for you xx

Okay that's made me feel alot better! Thank you! And congratulations to you giving birth to your baby boy 💙

Strawberry08 · 31/12/2021 19:24

@Becky280592 you’re welcome. And with my miscarriages everything seemed to be going along perfectly, no concerning symptoms. With this one, I had pain, cramps, twinges, spotting etc but had a perfect complication free pregnancy. So hopefully your symptoms only mean good!

That's exactly the same with me! I guess it's a good sign and I will start to have more positive thoughts about it now 😘 thanks again lovely x

Becky280592 · 03/01/2022 17:51

Hey strawberry 08
Sorry to have to ask such a personal question but I wanted to put the pessaries in rectally tonight but I'm worried there just not going to go in :/ did you use lubricant when you did it? X

Strawberry08 · 03/01/2022 18:23

Hey, don’t worry at all! I didn’t use a lubricant, they do go up there and after the first time or two (which does feel a bit weird and uncomfortable) you soon get used to it.
If you want to use a bit of lube use something like ky jelly and just a tiny bit
