Fasting Blood Sugar Level

Hello ladies,

Hope you are doing well. I am in my second trisem and have been warned about gestational diabetic due to family history. I am due a test next month in 3rd Trisem but tried testing fasting sugar level today using home kit. It came out 5.7 mmol/lt.

Would like to know the normal recommended level and if i should be worried about having gestational diabetic, please advise

The GTT tests how your body reacts to a glucose drink to see how well it maintains a normal levels.
You fast from 9pm the night before blood test taken at hospital, glucose drink then another blood test 2 hours later.

Thankyou @Chelyanne for sharing the link. Little confused with it as to which range i should refer. I am non diabetic as per my history pre pregnancy so does below range apply as normal for fasting ?
I did fast for 10 hrs before taking the home test this morning.
4.0 to 5.9 mmol/L

I don't know if yours will be the same as mine, but because of Covid. They literally do fasting blood sugar now. And if it comes back with a high result, they bring you in for the normal test with the drink.
I was surprised but they are trying to avoid people being there for too long so you literally fast from 9pm the night before, go in, have your blood test and that's it

I believe up to 5.4 or 5.5 is considered normal for a fasting blood sugar so yours is slightly high so they would probably calm you back if it came back the same

I'd go with the 4-5.9, as you are on the high end and have family history they may want to do the full GTT if it's the same on test day.
Tbh I don't think you have been fasted long enough to give you the most accurate results, ideally you want to do 12 hours as they would at hospital.

I don't know the levels for non fasting as I only asked about normal results for my blood test which she said between 4 and 5.5 were considered normal.

If you hadn't eaten or drank anything for 10 hours though, yours wouldn't be far off a fasting level

Hi Op, for gestational diabetes your fasting level should be under 5.3. Have you measured your levels one hour after eating as well? If not, could you do so?

Over 5.3mmol is classed as high fasting levels for GD in my trust.
However NICE guidelines is over 5.6 for fasting levels.

I would measure your levels over the next few days, fasting, 1 hour and 2 hour post meal and see how they go. Then report back. Levels should be under 7.8mmol 1 hour post and under 6.4mmol 2 hours post x
