First time mum and vegan?

Hey everyone,

This is my first time posting on here, I just joined but I'd been reading lots of posts on here while I'd been ttc.

I found out I'm pregnant quite early (as I have a short cycle) and I'm 4+4 today with my first baby! I have all sorts of emotions going on right now but it's an amazing, surreal feeling.

I'm super excited but also nervous as there's a long way to go and I just don't really know what to expect!

Anyway I just wanted to see if there were any other new vegan mums-to-be out there? How are you all feeling and what's going through your mind right now?

Hope to connect with some of you as covid is going to make connecting with people in real life pretty hard!

Hi Plantbasedmum. I'm vegan too (13 years). Congrats on the bfp. I'm nearly 36 weeks pregnant so at the other end of the journey! I have a nearly 3 year old son so not a first timer. My worry atm is this baby is breech. I was hoping for a natural birth but if they can't turn the baby then it's a C-section for me at 39 weeks. Are you taking a pregnancy multivitamin and mineral supplement? Any pesky symptoms yet?

Plantbasedmama · 09/02/2021 20:57

Hey @ChatWithMe.

So nice to hear from you! That's so awesome, I was brought up vegan but I have so much respect for people who weren't and have decided to go vegan themselves.

Thank you and congrats to you too! How have you found this pregancy compared to your last? So lovely your little boy is going to have a new bro/sis very soon.

Ah I see, are there different ways to try and get them to turn around or is it pretty much out of your control at this point? Is it uncomfortable or more the worry about the birthing plan for you? I'm going to try for as natural a birth as possible too.

So I was taking the vegan pregnacare vitmans but they made me feel really awful! So I switched to taking just Vit D and Folic acid at the moment until my Viridian pregnancy multivitamins turn up (also ordered the pregnancy omega oil). But let me know if you have any recommendations!

My boobs are super sore and I seem to be getting tired very early in the evenings already which surprised me a bit. How did you get on with symptoms?

Currently 8weeks 5days and vegan ☺️ Congratulations on your BFP! 🥳

I'm currently suffering with bad morning (all day) sickness, nausea and food aversion. On cyclizine tablets 3x per day which has helped, but still being sick in the evenings... can't wait to get through the first trimester! We were trying for just shy of a year though so I'm just happy to be finally expecting ☺️

Thanks :-) Symptoms these days are just lethargy and heartburn. To be expected but can't wait to get a break from it once the baby comes. However after the birth it's sleep deprivation so not sure which is preferable!

My first pregnancy was mainly about hoping my low lying placenta would move away from my cervix and associated bleeding until week 28 I think. Thank goodness no bleeding this time round. What worries me about the ECV (baby turning) is it may not work then if I need a C-section it's not great for the baby. I've read babies born via Csection have altered microbiomes and initial difficulties with breastfeeding. However I'd be more worried about a vaginal breech birth with risks of brain damage and death to my baby so that's definitely not the plan.

That's great you've been vegan life long. I'd love to be able to say that :-) Our toddler has been vegan his whole life and he's really healthy and happy. Let me know if you have any questions about raising vegan kids.

Oh and MF24 I hope your pregnancy sickness improves. I had it until 12/13 weeks.

I was vegan but now veggie, as I have crossaints and a normal slice of cake if I fancy one. Normal chocolate etc but bulk of meals is vegan. I also had really bad sickness until 12 weeks and I have found I've been thinking I fancy eating meat (my donalds chicken sandwich) but never would. Not eaten meat for 4 years so I know I don't really want it and feel it would make me sick as I had some fish by accident about 18months ago and was violently ill! I'm enjoying fruit and toast and pasta. Dont really fancy big evening meals anymore like I used to eat so tend to snack alot.

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the late reply. I was spotting a bit of pink blood yesterday and then today I've had some heavy red bleeding (but not much pain) so I'm feeling a bit down today and worried about an early mc. Was given the advice to monitor the bleeding and take another pregnancy test next week. Will have to see what happens and hoping it doesn't get any worse now!

@MF24 huge congrats 👏 so pleased for you and hope the symptoms ease off a bit as you get into the second trimester!

@ChatWithMe I hope the baby turns around soon or the EVC works. Fingers crossed. I saw you had some early bleeding too and things turned out okay so I do have a bit of hope.

@Redskinsucks congrats to you! That must be strange craving meat! I don't think I'd be able to as I've never even tasted it lol. Have been trying to eat a lot healthier over the past couple of weeks with lots of beans, lentils and fruit- I usually eat well but certainly not this well haha.

Best wishes for you all xx

Aw poor thing. Sorry to hear that Plantbasedmama. It's too early to do anything but wait. Waiting sucks when you're worried about something so important. I have my fingers crossed for you. At 6 weeks they can check for a heartbeat on an ultrasound at the maternal assessment unit near you. Until then you can get a few first response early response (FRER) pregnancy tests to monitor the line strength (first urine in the morning only) every few days. Good luck x

Plantbasedmama · 12/02/2021 15:33

Thank you for replying @ChatWithMe and for being so kind! Yes waiting isn't fun but what will be will be. Hope everything's okay with you xx

ChatWithMe · 12/02/2021 17:59

Sure. Thanks for your well wishes. Baby hasn't turned (had scan today) so awaiting ECV appointment. Take it easy Plantbasedmama x
