Measuring big

Hiya, had my 28wk appointment yesterday with midwife. She measured my tummy and I'm measuring at 33cm so obviously abit bigger than I should be. She said her measures isnt 100% accurate so if I measure bigger at 36 weeks I will be sent for a scan. Has anyone else had this and how accurate was the scan and your midwife mesurements and also if the scan says I'm measureing big at 36weeks what will happen? Also is this anything to worry about as midwife says it's not but I worry about things anyways lol

Honestly, I'm not sure but didn't want to read and run. My measurements are on the bigger side but still within the range on the chart (90th centile) so I can't really comment on your situation.

My midwife did tell me that the actual measurement isn't that accurate for determining how big the baby will be and they are more interested in the trend because different women carry differently. She said they worry if you measure small but not if you measure big so long as you follow the growth trend. Also different midwives measure differently.

You should have an appointment before 36 weeks? You could always ask your MW if you can get an appointment in say 3 weeks to see what is happening?

I hope someone can put your mind at rest.

I always measured 3 weeks ahead on my bump, and at a growth scan at 36 weeks babys belly was measuring at 41 weeks! She was on the 98th centile and I was induced at 38 weeks, she was 8lb 13oz so not massive but not small either. I dread to think her size if I'd have gone full term or over! X

Hi OP,

I was exactly the same at my 28 week scan/appt. I’m nearly 30 weeks now. They asked me if I had been checked for gestational diabetes and I hadn’t so they sent me for a blood test a few days later. They said they would call if any problems with the results and I haven’t heard anything so I’m hoping it is okay. I don’t mean to worry you but have they mentioned checking you for GD? I would assume they would also at the least want to scan you a couple of more times before your due date. Sometimes babies grow bigger when the Mum has developed GD. I have 2 more scans booked in anyway due to other risk factors so they are monitoring me quite closely. If you are concerned please speak to your midwife again.
Good luck, I hope all goes well.

This happened to me and had to go for a growth scan. All was well. Told me baby was going to be at LEAST a 10lber! ... came out 2 days late and 7lb11. Only a guide 😁😁 good luck for the rest of your pregnancy xxx

Hey bumpgrowing
Yes my midwife sent me dor a GD blood test this morning altho she said she wasnt going to last appointment lol so maybe baby growing bigger changed her mind? As for scans none has been mentioned.. I had a private growth scan at 25weeks and baby belly measured at 26 weeks. All she said to me was its nothjng to be concerned about it's the small babys we worry about and if your still measuring big at 36 weeks we will scan you then no other appointments for scans been made.

Bump measurement are really variable as everyone has different amounts of fluid and everyone’s muscles will stretch differently.
Your bump will can also measure bigger or smaller depending on which way the baby is lying.

I was sent for a scan as my bump was measuring too small... but the scan showed my baby is actually quite big.

(Scans aren’t completely accurate for estimating weight either, but probably more reliable than bump measurements).

I had this with DC3, told I was measuring big, sent for GDD. Everything was fine and she arrived a little early weighing 8lb 1 oz. With DC1 I had the opposite. Told at 38 weeks I was measuring small. Started worrying I was going to have a tiny 5lb baby. He was born a week later bang on 29 weeks weighing 7lb 13. Honestly a tape measure is not a great measure of size. I wouldn't worry too much,

Lissie1986 · 09/02/2021 16:55

I think jm mainly worrying if I carry ALOT of fluid I know at 25week scan I had she said I had a nice amount of fluid around the baby n everything looked good, could this change in 3 weeks lol she always soxher estimated weight at 25 weeks was 1lb 14oz I'm hoping everything ok with GD blood test and that shes not messuring 5 weeks ahead lol

I've measured big with all of mine, they did turn out bigger than average, last baby was 9lb 9oz but they're just checking, most women won't have GD and have an average size baby, it's just a precaution

LifeIsBusy · 09/02/2021 20:06

I'm currently 30 weeks and went back for a scan at 28 weeks due to an unrelated issue and they measured the baby's femurs at 32 weeks, head at 30 weeks and stomach at 28 weeks and then asked if I had been checked for GD. I got checked for that a few days later and my bump was measuring 32 at my 28 week appointment. Both the midwife and aren't concerned as I'm 5ft 10 and DS was on 97th centile for height when he was born.

I'm going back at 34 weeks for additional growth scans but other than that there is nothing to be concerned about..other that clothing not fitting you towards the end 😂

Pandemicpregnancy · 09/02/2021 21:58

Bump measurements are really inaccurate and it's all about the trend in measurements- do they follow a nice line or show growth has sped up or slowed down.

I was measuring similar at 28 weeks and also worried about it. Ended up having a scan for unrelated reasons at 30 weeks and baby was actually measuring exactly on the 50th centile so couldn't be more average. Bump measurements showed static growth later on in pregnancy but another scan showed baby was growing fine. She was born at 42 weeks weighing 8lb 11oz. I think you have to take all of these measurements with a pinch of salt because no one really knows until they are here!

ButtonMoonPie · 09/02/2021 22:22

Measured big throughout, they did a few extra appts to measure but didn't scan me. I worried about it a lot. Baby was just 7lbs. Although was undetected breech and I wonder if it was that position that made the bump measure bigger.

JTB123 · 09/02/2021 23:46

I measured 31 weeks at my 28 week midwife appointment! I was sent for a growth scan and was bang on 28 weeks...same happened again last week at my 31 week midwife appointment, and I was measuring 33 weeks... again all normal! The tape measure method used is always way off!
Xx

Lissie1986 · 10/02/2021 19:46

@JTB123 I'm wondering if I measure 33weeks why wouldnt they send me for a scan lol thsts 5 weeks ahead of my gestation its crazy.. surly if the measures arnt accurate why do it lol just unnecessary worry for us x

Hi I am 13weeks pregnant and my first scan was terrible as my midwife says baby's back neck shows extra fluid which is 5.6,normal one is 3.5.I am so worried and going to have my next scan and cvs next day to check whether the fluid due the abnormalities for the baby or not.I did the screening blood test and they says 2% in 46 chance of down syndrome and other abnormalities.I am so worried and it is my first baby that i got after 3years of marriage.I just wanted to know anyone gone through similiar situation and had good results.Since after scanning each day is so stressful for us.Please somebody respond to this situation i am going through now.

LifeIsBusy · 10/02/2021 23:10

@Ash21ma you might want to post this in a new thread to get the attention of other users. I personally have no experience of what you're going through but 1 in 46 isn't all that high if you think about it. That means 45 babies are born without DS and one will have it. I assume you're going to go for additional screaning? If so, I say you sit back, enjoy the 2nd trimester as much as possible and wait for the other results to come back before you start to worry. Focus on the milestones your baby is reaching week by week, or focus on something unrelated to the pregnancy because at the minute you can potentially have 45 babies before having one with additional support needs.
