Private early scan?

Hello everyone.
Me and my fiance have been trying for 2.5 years, we have finally conceived on month 6 of clomid and I am currently 4+5. The fertility clinic are doing an early scan on me at 7 weeks but I was wondering if anyone has had a private scan at 6 wks and if it was worth it? I would be 5+6 on the only date available but would really like the earlier reassurance!

You don't see much that early. Better waiting for the 7 weeks as you are more likely to see a heartbeat at that stage.

I had a scan in July at 8+3 with my last and baby had a hb but only measured 7+4. Miscarriage rates reduce after seeing a hb but I still lost that one a week later.
12+1wk with current pregnancy, felt like a lifetime waiting for the dating scan but just 2 days left now.

I would be very cautious about going that early. I had a scan last Friday at what I thought was 6 weeks (but may have actually only been 5+4) and they could only see the gestational sac. This has resulted in me now having to have a torturous 2 week wait to see if it was just too early to see more or whether I have miscarried. I really regret going for the scan now as if I had waited 2 more weeks like I had originally planned then I would of had a definite answer either way.

Obviously this is just my experience but as a result I would now always advise people to wait until 7 weeks to avoid this situation x

A scan that early often will only worry you more as it's too early to see anything. Wait until the 7 week scan Smile

WalkingMeAway · 07/02/2021 10:42

Agree with PP you risk at that gestation not seeing the yolk sac/embryo/heartbeat and worrying yourself even more.

I would wait until the 7w. Much more reliable

Congratulations.

MsHedgehog · 07/02/2021 10:44

As others said, you should wait. I was desperate to see if I was actually pregnant because I didn’t believe it but we deliberately waited until 8 weeks to have the early scan to avoid any disappointment by scanning too early and not seeing anything.

BabyC21 · 07/02/2021 10:50

So I would only recommend a scan at that stage if you are in pain or suspect an ectopic. I had a scan at 5 & 3 for that reason and it helped in the sense that it confirmed that the pregnancy was in the right location. So that was a big relief BUT as the fetal
Pole was questionable at 1.8mm with no heartbeat I saw the the doctor after and he said it could go either way, I had to wait 8 day’s till the next scan... they wanted me to wait longer but as it was ten day’s before Christmas I managed to convince them to do it before then. Thankfully there was a heartbeat at 6&5 and I’m now 13&2 and all is well. But if it wasn’t for the pain I would have preferred to just have my scan closer to 7 weeks as those 8 day’s were torture.
Hope all goes well for you :)

I would wait in your position, and I say that as someone who had scans at 5+6 with both pregnancies and was able to see the heartbeat

I must have ovulated bang on the middle of the month with DS1 as the heartbeat was strong and fast.

With DS2, his HB was much slower and OBGYN suspected his heart had only started beating within hours of the scan as we could see it picking up the pace as we watched.

If there is doubt as to when you ovulated it may lead to more stress for you if you don't see what you need.

By 7 weeks you will be in a better position to see a HB especially if youre not 100% sure when you ovulated.

Good luck 🍀

@Sarah5678 congratulations!!

We are 4+2weeks, 2.5yrs ttc and 4th round of clomid. My anxiety is running really high and wanted to book in a scan ASAP, been early unit have also booked me for 7weeks. So not going to bother with a private scan.

Best of luck with your scans 😘

Congratulations. We have also been trying for over 2 years and I am now 5 weeks Grin we have a private scan booked for 8 weeks but not sure how much I’m expecting to see but the reassurance will be worth it x

Sarah5678 · 07/02/2021 12:48

Thank you for the pics that has really helped!!
Congrats @Thefaceofboe I would think 8 weeks you would see something decent! It's all about the reassurance isn't it! X

@Sarah5678 yes massively, there’s no way I can wait till 12 weeks. I am so excited but didn’t realise how anxious I would be x

Moominmiss · 07/02/2021 13:25

I’ve had 3 early scans so far 🙈

After 4 mc I’ve been a wreck.

My first scan was via the EPU who offered me a reassurance scan due to my previous losses.

I was 5+4 and we saw a heartbeat.

I then had another scan at 6+2 and was even clearer with a heartbeat agsin.

I then had another scan today at 7 weeks. Still measuring bang on and a lovely strong heartbeat.

I will likely have another one at 8+4 or 5 and then I have another booked for 10 weeks.

My midwife just said have them weekly if it gives me even a small amount of reassurance.

This will be my final pregnancy so I’m making the most of it!

Congratulations!

Moominmiss · 07/02/2021 13:27

This was my 5+4 scan where we saw a heartbeat

This was 6+2

20viona · 07/02/2021 13:28

I had one at 9 weeks and we saw the heartbeat. I'd hang on a few weeks if you can congrats.

Moominmiss · 07/02/2021 13:29

Then this was today’s at 7 weeks. It’s less clear because this scan was an abdominal scan and the other 2 were transvaginal.

I was a bit disappointed to have the abdo one today as I know we’d have got a clearer image via a tv scan. But was still amazing.

NinaMimi · 07/02/2021 13:46

Congratulations! I think you made the right decision. I’ve seen a lot of posts from women who get the scan early and then they get panicked as the heartbeat hasn’t developed yet when really there’s nothing wrong it’s just too early.

Starlive23 · 07/02/2021 14:02

I'm with pp, I had early scans (IVF) and you can't really see much before 7w which can make you way more nervous than if you leave it til a bit later.

Ro198 · 07/02/2021 14:06

I had to have scans early as I was in hospital, they couldn’t see a sac at first (I think I was just over 4 weeks) and it went off on a route of suspected ectopic for a while which was completely unnecessary. I’d wait until 7 weeks. I was having them every couple of days and couldn’t really see anything until just before 6 weeks I think.
