Bleeding at 10 weeks pregnant

Hi everyone, I'm so worried!

Two days ago I started bleeding after exercising. It began with a few drops of red blood in the toilet, and then darker blood continued to come out until the next morning (similar to the first day of a period). I don't know if it could be due to the fact that I had sex the day before..

Yesterday I had some very slight cramps (but it could be unrelated) and a few more drops of darker blood. Today it seems to have almost stopped. There is a bit of leftover brown blood on my pad.

I don't have a midwife or doctor yet, I've been trying to get one for over a month but things are delayed because of coronavirus. I called a nurse yesterday and she told me not to worry too much, since bleeding happens to a lot of women during the first trimester. She told me I should only go to the ER if I start passing huge clots and bleed enough to fill two pads an hour.

I really don't know what to do. Has anyone had a similar experience??

Thank you

Here we are advised to call GP for an EPAU referral or go to A&E if they are shut (weekends) for any bleeding.
A little pink/brown spotting can be normal but anything heavier needs to be investigated. Good luck.

I've not had a similar experience with red blood, although I am currently experiencing light brown discharge at 8 weeks 3 days, I don't have a midwife yet either. I think red bleeding is best checked although it could definitely be due to exercise. I wish I could help you more, I'm worried myself too and not even sure who to ask Confused

@Nessi24 I had some spotting/very light bleeding for three day’s at 10 weeks. I was seen by EPU and everything with baby was fine. I had an internal examination and turns out I have a polyp on my cervix, which is just going to be left until after I give birth. I’m 14+5 now and not had the spotting for a couple of weeks. Could easily be something innocent, and some women do just spot in pregnancy, but would suggest getting checked out if you can/if it happens again x

Sorry to hear this OP. Sorry if you have thought of this but have you googled your Early Pregnancy Unit. Due to c19, our local unit doesn’t require a GP referral so you can call them and they will help. If they think you need to be seen, they can make an appointment for a scan for you (which they did for me when I had bleeding In early pregnancy) Good luck

Thanks everyone for the responses and advice!! I went to the ER today and, after waiting about 6-7 hours, I finally saw a doctor who did a scan of my abdomen. The baby is all good!!! He was moving a lot and seemed perfect according to the doctor. He is also the right size for his age. They can't explain why I was bleeding, but my cervix is closed so everything is fine. I am SO relieved!

Hi OP,

This is fantastic news! You must be so relieved!
I had something similar when I was 14
Weeks and they finally found out it was to
Do with an ectropian cervix....a hormonal change brought on by pregnancy makes it more likely to bleed. Totally fine for the baby. It can happen after sex or if you really strain yourself. Might be worth looking it up because if it is that it can happen throughout the pregnancy and I didn't find out until a second bleed
What it was.....it was all so worrying.
I hope your pregnancy all goes really well for you, best of luck xx

Also had no idea how common w
This was and thought all bleeding in pregnancy was bad but actually a lot of the time there are explanations for it which is good to know xx

That's brilliant. Just for some reassurance, I bled for 6 weeks straight from 9 weeks I think it was. I had bright red blood and brown blood, watery blood and large clots the size of my fist.

I went to hospital 3 times I think it was after a large bleed each time and each time they would offer a scan which showed a heartbeat and my cervix was always closed.

My boy is 4 months now and totally unaffected.

Nessi24 · 07/02/2021 18:21

Thanks for the advice, I will look that up! I think my cervix is probably just really sensitive and the exercise irritated it.

I am so relieved because when I first came in to the ER the nurses I saw all told me it was a miscarriage (without even examining me!). The doctors on the other hand were more prudent, they told me they had to do a scan to know for sure. But they were so shocked when they saw my baby move that much! I can't believe it either honestly because most days I don't have too many pregnancy symptoms apart from being very tired haha

Thanks for the reassurance Ajahd, I didn't know so many women bled during their pregnancy! I'm so glad your baby is fine :) Take care!

Every time I went in, the nurses would tell me I was having a threatened miscarriage. I remember the first nurse who said it being so matter of factly as she said it, I burst into tears and a junior doctor ended up holding my hand while I cried. I have so much love and respect for nurses, but this nurse really just made it so much harder to deal with.

Honestly, your cervix being closed is a good sign. Part of my job meant I walked a lot of miles throughout the day. I asked if this was having an effect and I was told no. After 6 weeks and a particularly heavy bleed which left me very faint, I decided to take a week off to recuperate. Mightve been a coincidence but the bleeding slowly got better from there

Nessi24 · 11/02/2021 23:21

@Ajahd yes I've noticed that too, Im taking a break from exercising too much and the bleeding has pretty much stopped. Today I had another scan (the first official one) and my baby is still doing fine! He has grown a lot since last week so the bleeding doesn't seem to have affected him. I'm so relieved 😅
