PREGNANT WITH IUD!

Hi all,

I’m hoping for some advice/reassurance if possible please.

I had a Kyleena IUD inserted in July 2019 and have had very irregular periods since then, the gap between them getting longer and longer until they stopped in October 2020.

Past couple of weeks I have felt awful, drained, tired, little appetite and emotional and put it down to a family member being ill and the stress of lockdown. This morning I began dry heaving, I have a little girl who is 2 in April so immediately thought I could be pregnant and took a test. Since then I have taken five tests all of which are positive! Used two clear blue dating tests, one of which came back 1-2 weeks the other 2-3 weeks. However that can’t possibly be correct as the last time I had intercourse was 5 weeks ago.

Phoned my GP who seemed quite blasé about it, said to wait a few weeks then he will refer me for a scan.

Can anyone offer any advice or knowledge? Has this happened to anyone else please?

Thank you xxx

Did the GP not offer to do an internal exam to check for the device? There is an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy with an IUD too so waiting a few weeks seems a bit odd. I would ask for a second opinion.

I fell pregnant with my twins less than a year after getting the copper coil fitted. I was checked by GP the same day I called to say I was pregnant and he couldn't see the string so booked me in for a scan the next day. When they scanned me they couldn't find the IUD but could clearly see 2 babies with strong heartbeats, they did both abdominal and vaginal scans. My cousins friend also lost one, no unplanned pregnancy though.

Hi Chelyanne,

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. I can actually still feel my strings for definite!
He just said it’s likely to be very early so best to wait, but I will take your advice and ask for a second opinion tomorrow morning. I can’t possibly wait a few weeks to see what the situation is.

Thank you again, I really appreciate it. Xxx

Hope you’ve found some more advice on this OP - I second PP, if you haven’t had a period since October then your GP should be arranging a scan for you now, not in a few weeks, for dates and to rule out ectopic. Sounds like you would be around 6-8 weeks now based on your symptoms. You also need the IUD removed. And obviously have some decisions to make if not made already! Small increased risk of miscarriage if the IUD stays in, even smaller when pulling it out, most of the time everything proceeds normally.

Thank you, I have a call with my GP tomorrow to discuss. I’m not sure I’m ready to make any decisions just yet, I wanted to hear more about risks etc. And thank you for your advice. I’m all over the place to be honest, my GP is a little old fashioned. I think he thinks I’ve “made a mistake” about the dates (which I am 100% certain on)

He is also insistent that my IUD must have fallen out, which I know it hasn’t as I can feel my strings still!

See what tomorrow brings, thanks again for your help. I’ll let you know how I get on x

How did you get on? I've also found out I'm pregnant with the copper IUD! I'm not happy about it either. The device had moved but I would not have known as no chance with the threads!

Allthehabum · 17/09/2021 20:27

This also happened to me.

I think this happens more than they let on!

Broken Copper IUD on removal- miscarriage

Hello, I'm after some advice.
I had my copper IUD removed on 20th April this year. Fell pregnant straight away. Sadly, miscarried at roughly 5 weeks. Whilst the 'miscarriage' left my body, so did one of the arms from my IUD. I was not told anything was left inside me. Did this cause my miscarriage. I'm so cross with GP for not even telling me an arm was left inside!! Any advice very welcome. Thanks in advance x
