Hi all, found out I was pregnant today after having Xrays on my lower teeth and jaw. I was going to say at the time that I was due my period but it didn't come, but didn't think I would be pregnant as I have endometriosis and pcos aswell as an choclate cyst on my ovary and only went unprotected a few times, and didn't want to re book due to tooth pain but I feel stupid and just awful now!!!! I wish I just did just say..!
Is it safe? they didnt cover me up at all. I would say, I would only be 4 weeks pregnant.
Any experience?
Will It affect the baby or anything? So worried!!!!
I feel so terrible right now

Thank you for reading

The X-ray dose is actually quite low for teeth xrays. It's also quite well targeted at your head. There is almost zero risk to an embryo.

“During dental X-rays, lead aprons are no longer routinely used to protect the abdomen or pelvis as most dental X-rays don't affect this area. Also, the dose of radiation in dental X-rays is so low there's virtually no risk to the unborn baby”

Congratulations!

Yep I wouldn't worry. I had an xray on my ankle at 4 weeks pregnant and everything turned out fine. The radiation is very targeted. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

EllieRosesMammy · 04/02/2021 10:30

You should be fine, I had an xray at 10 weeks pregnant on my foot. They covered my stomach with a protective sheet but I dont think its necessary for a tooth xray :) oh and congrats x

You get a lot more radiation from going on a plane than a dental x-ray, and like people said it's targetted. So nothing to worry about.

Babysensoryspider · 04/02/2021 13:39

Congratulations! Agree with previous posts, dental x ray radiation dose is absolutely tiny

I'm very conscious of radiation doses in diagnostic imaging for various medical reasons but this would not concern me

Thanks for your comments it's such a relief, although I wish I could turn back still and tell them as I just felt like I knew I was pregnant, argh so frustrated with myself. But I'm so glad to hear it's not dangerous for the baby x thank you for replying x

They are very accurately targeted and the dose is tiny so I wouldn't worry. I guess that many women must have been x-rayed before realising they were pregnant.

Back in the 60s before ultrasound was common x-rays were very occasionally used during pregnancy to determine the position of the baby if the doctors were having difficulty sussing it out. It was done to my mother in 1966 shortly before I was born because they couldn't work me out (transverse, so lying sideways on). They did try to avoid doing it, and thankfully we now have ultrasound, which is better.

Hi sorry as I know this an old post but I had a dexa scan after a negative pregnancy test but the test was positive the next day.. I must have been 4 weeks and 3 days. Absolutely gutted! Can you let me know how you got on thanks xx

Inthesky42 · 19/05/2022 15:48

I had an xray on suspected broken ankle. I was late for my period. Took a pregnancy test at hospital. It was negative. Had the xray. 2 days later still no period took another test and it was positive. Happy to report that he's now a bouncy 2.5yr old boy with no health issues whatsoever. The radiation is really low in a dental xray and is a long way away from your abdomen. You'll be fine. Congratulations!

@Inthesky42 @ErikaJGoldman thanks so much for your replies its so good to hear of people who it worked out ok for <3 my dexa scan was on my hips and spine to check bone density for osteoporosis but I couldn’t find any with the same scan on mumsnet so I put my comment under the dental x ray one so should have clarified but thanks so much
