Dating scan and anomaly scan different genders

I wondered if anyone can help me? I had a dating scan at 13 weeks, was told pretty certain it is a boy. Then I went to my 20 week appointment and I was told he could not tell as the legs were crossed very slightly and covering everything. Although he went on to tell u he thinks the first prediction was wrong and it is 60% chance a girl. Now I am so confused as to who is right and who is wrong. The first doctor said 90% chance boy, the second said 60% chance girl.

I'm not sure what you're hoping people on here can tell you.

You have two options. Wait until your baby is born or pay for a private scan in the hope you'll get a definitive answer.

Is there a reason that you feel you need to know?

Ithinkhedidit · 02/02/2021 18:01

13 weeks is too early to tell surely? I was told girl at my 20w scan for ds2 and he is absolutely a boy so these things aren't 100%. The most important thing is a healthy baby! Congratulations!

WhenTwoBecomeThree · 02/02/2021 18:02

13 weeks is very early! If it is a boy, the bits could be hidden so it looks like a girl so could both be right in a sense, I'd either wait until you're further on or the only way to know 100% is to wait until baby is born

luxxlisbon · 02/02/2021 18:03

I'm surprised they even told you what they thought the sex was at 13 weeks, that is so early and definitely not within the 'safe' window for being able to determine the sex of a baby.

Crazycatlady83 · 02/02/2021 18:04

Are you in the UK OP, they wouldn’t normally tell you the sex at the 12 week scan as it’s too early to be reliable

Pinkblueberry · 02/02/2021 18:06

I didn’t know they could even do them properly at 13 weeks. Surely that’s not reliable - the anomaly scan would be more accurate.

Sammisaga1 · 02/02/2021 18:10

I went privately and he was pretty certain what he was seeing at my 13 week scan. I don’t mind what I’m having either way but I just wondered if anyone else has been through anything similar. It completely thrown me at my 20 week scan when he told me 60% girl. He said he is basing it on this because he can not see the scrotum. However, the legs weren’t only tight together, they were also crossed to make it even more complicated! I am going for another scan tomorrow so I will update you on what they find out! Hopefully baby wants to show us this time

13 weeks is far too early to tell... it'd just be a 50/50 guess. Round these parts they'll not even attempt a gender scan before 16 weeks.

I would wait for the next scan and see what you can see yourself as well as what they tell you. They are very easy to tell apart at this gestation if they're playing ball and give you a nice clear shot between the legs.

Even then it is too early and is more of a guess than anything. Generally the earliest you can even book for a private place to tell you the gender is 16 and some encourage 18+.

I would probably ignore the first one altogether, chalk the 20w one up to the baby being in a bad position and go in with an open mind for your scan tomorrow when hopefully the baby is in a better position.

Mylittlesandwich · 02/02/2021 18:27

13 weeks is too early. I had a private scan at 18 weeks and they could tell very clearly that DS was a DS. He was in a good position though.

Cleverpolly3 · 02/02/2021 18:29

I’d be more confident in the anomaly scan tbh

Sammisaga1 · 02/02/2021 18:59

Yes I think you’re right! I’m so impatient I really hope he/she wants to show us tomorrow! Smile

I'd be very wary of a medical professional claiming they can tell the sex at 13 weeks.

emeraldcity2000 · 02/02/2021 21:18

I asked at my 13 week scan and a very experienced nhs consultant (I had complications first time) told me they are only about 60pc accurate in giving gender at that stage - ie, slightly better odds than a guess....

Sammisaga1 · 04/02/2021 09:01

So had the scan yesterday and the baby appears to be a boy! I think I will just wait for the surprise on arrival cos I don’t know what to believe now
