9 weeks shortness breath?

Hi guys I’m over 9 weeks and stm. I keep being disturbed in sleep and waking in morning feeling like I can breath fully but still not getting enough air in. I read it can be hormones but I’m obese and high risk but I’ve never had any chest issues and normally very active. Doctor has agreed to do chest examination in 7 days time! I’m trying to get a sooner appointment. I just wondered what anyone else’s experiences of this are and were you concerned? It’s mostly when asleep or lying down but starting to get when moving about. Any advice? Thank you 😊

@Booboospud is there any chance you could have contracted covid? I caught it at 6 weeks pregnant and put my breathlessness initially down to pregnancy but it later turned out to be covid (other symptoms appeared a few days later). Maybe just keep it in the back of your mind as something to keep an eye on

Hi @Booboospud do you have nasal congestion or nasal drip? I’m almost 13 weeks and I’ve been having this for the last 8/9 weeks and I realised that it’s affecting breathing through my nose which in turn leaves me breathless. I’m also obese though

linerforlife · 02/02/2021 16:58

I was breathless in early pregnancy, I think it's due to progesterone? It does go in your second trimester.

Has your iron levels been checked - that can cause shortness of breath.

Congratulations on your pregnancy

@Ss123456 sorry to hear you had this, I’ve been staying at home a lot on we only go out for our short walks and shopping at 6.30am when shops empty so I’m really hoping it’s not covid, I’m always very cautious. @BabyC21 I’m a little nasily right now but only started today and not had over the last week when this has really kicked in so unsure if it’s that but that you I’ll keep that in mind. Did you ask your dr or midwife about it at all? @linerforlife I feel bit reassured that it’s normal thank you. Thank you @Crazycatlady83, I’ve not had iron checked yet but I’ve never had iron issues but I will bring this up with midwife or doctor to get it checked. Just so annoyed I can’t get a sooner appointment and don’t want to call 111 unless really urgent and I can breath so it’s not urgent it’s just uncomfortable making me scared. But I’ll have to call 111 if gets worse just to put mind at ease 🤦‍♀️

@Booboospud you will have your bloods taken at your booking in appointment and if you ask your midwife they might expedite it for you. I hope you get to the bottom of it, whatever it is!

Booboospud · 02/02/2021 18:07

@Crazycatlady83 ah I didn’t realise they would check for iron levels too. That’s good I had that last week and midwife said everything was normal

Do you have acid reflux by any chance? I also have that so I think it’s a combination of the reflux and congestion. I didn’t speak to my doctor about it but had a covid test to rule it out and I’ve just figured it’s normal. My next midwife appointment is next week so will bring it up then. What I notice is I feel short of breath but if I focus on my breathing there’s no issues like I can take big breaths in and out, no pains etc, hope you start feeling better soon xx

meltedgalaxy · 02/02/2021 18:14

I'm exactly the same, I haven't got or had covid. My midwife said it isn't pregnancy related

Crazycatlady83 · 02/02/2021 18:17

@Booboospud that’s good then - one thing off the list of things that it might be! I hope it passes soon.

Booboospud · 02/02/2021 19:26

@meltedgalaxy it does say online it’s common in pregnancy due to hormones so it could. It’s such a worry tho isn’t it. I had no symptoms with my first this time I’ve got it all 😭

I was also going to suggest iron levels. I got very breathless at the end of my first trimester/start of 2nd and I was anaemic. As soon as I started iron tablets I felt much better.

Lullaby88 · 02/02/2021 19:51

I had shortness of breath, a tight feeling in my chest and a blocked nose in my first tri. I thought it could be covid but it went away after a few nights and i had nothing after that. I just used vicks vapour rub, slept on my side and stood up opened the window for fresh air when it felt uncomfortable. Never wore a bra aswel during that time.
