Just had my 20 week scan (I’m 21 weeks pregnant ) everything was going well until the woman couldn’t locate the base of my baby spins ! I’m worried stiff that my baby has spina bifata she couldn’t see parts of the heart either and all she could say is baby’s heart is beating but you will have to come back next week to see if the baby will move so we can rescan her face was all smiles until she got to the baby’s back I could of threw up their and then now I’m in such a state I don’t know how to calm myself down or how to even begin to wait 7 days before I know if something wrong with my baby has this ever happened to anyone else ? What was the out come

It's quite common for people to go back a week later because things couldn't be seen. If baby is in awkward position they can't see everything clearly.
I wouldn't worry unless they identity something wrong on the second scan.

I had this at my 20 week scan. I was a mess crying for days after but my best friend, who is a sonography, assured me it happens all the time, it's the way the baby was lay. All was fine when I went back

MrsTeachers · 01/02/2021 18:38

sonographer

Pipperleen · 01/02/2021 18:43

Same for me, had to go back a week later. DH and I were a mess.
All was fine - she’s 4 months old now and healthy as a horse!
Best wishes for your scan x

I had to go back too as they couldn’t see my baby’s heart properly. Did she actually say she was concerned about anything, or just that she couldn’t see what she needed to?

Babyjune21 · 01/02/2021 19:15

@swiftt no didn’t say she was concerned just couldn’t see everything she wanted to I know I’m over reacting and wish I could stop

@Babyjune21thats so, so common so try not to worry! Lots of women need to be rescanned when baby is in an awkward position. Doesn’t mean anything is wrong x

Krazynights34 · 01/02/2021 20:09

Op are you going to see foetal medicine for your next scan?
Hopefully all is well.
How were things at the 12 week scan?

3JsMa · 01/02/2021 20:11

It is very common so please don't worry.
So many things can affect the view during scan.It could be baby position, amniotic fluid or just crap equipment.

EcoCustard · 01/02/2021 20:13

I had this at two 20 week scans in my 2nd and 4th pregnancy. Sonographer couldn’t get accurate measurements due to baby’s position and lack of co-operation despite moving, coughing, etc. I went back about 7/8 days later and all was fine. It’s stressful op but try not to worry.

sarahc336 · 01/02/2021 20:15

With my 20 week scan in the summer with dd2 she couldn't see the end of the spine as my dd was sat right on her bum. I went back a week later and they completed the scan, all was fine and she's since been born and is fine. It'll be your babies position that wouldn't allow a full scan of the spine, inwas told to sign off the spine part they have to see the entire spine 😄

Babyjune21 · 01/02/2021 21:58

@swiftt thanks so much for the vote of reassurance it really does make all the difference x

@Krazynights34 hi no she said just the same scan over again 12 week scan seemed fine I was also scanned at 18 weeks due to my c section scar in the inside being fussed together it was a high risk doctor that done scan and she said she was happy with baby , I had totally forgot that until you said about the 12 week scan !! Maybe I will get some sleep tonight after all x

@3JsMa @EcoCustard @sarahc336 thanks so much for replying it’s reassuring to have supportive words and to know im not the only one that’s went threw it , I was diagnosed with server trauma and ptsd due to events that took place in a hospital, I am seen by high risk doctors and am only seen by the one mid wife who is a mental health mid wife I will have planned c section so all areas of delivery can be as controlled as possible same as last birth this is my last baby and I think I struggle like everyone when things don’t go to plan by knowing I’m not just losing my mind knowning that woman feel this way all the time makes me feel so much more at ease so thank you x

At my 20w scans, I've had to do star jumps to try to get baby in a better position, go for a walk round the hospital and try again in half an hour, and for one, come back the next week as they couldn't do all the heart measurements. It's really really common.
