Hi all,

I’m pregnant. Yay

I am only entitled to SMP, nothing enhanced because of my length of service.

My job it’s crap to be honest. Can someone tell me the financial implications of not returning after mat leave?!

1- would I tell them from the beginning I don’t want to return?
2- do I keep quiet and still accrue holiday ?
3- if I quit as I begin maternity leave would I have to claim to HMRC for SMP?

thank you.

I wouldn't tell them you don't want to return before you start maternity.
It really depends on your contract as to how much notice you need to give them. I would have a read through any employee handbooks available from HR. If you need assistance the citizens advice should be able to help you with it all.

I wouldn’t tell them before maternity. I’d hand my notice in a month before I was due to go back

As PP have said, hand your notice in a month before returning. Though a couple of things - can you afford not to work? Will your DP/H’s wages cover the bills while you job hunt after maternity? If your DP is on a low enough wage to be entitled, you won’t be able to claim benefits if you’ve voluntarily left your job.

  1. Don't tell them
  2. Yes
  3. Find out your notice period and if you don't want to return hand your notice in so that your notice ends when you are due to return

I don't think you should tell them you're not going back. It's better to leave the option open even if you're sure you don't want to go back.
