Doctor has confused me

Hi, I’m 5 weeks today and had one sided bad pains so ended up in hospital today where they scanned me for ectopic pregnancy. Doctor that scanned me (internal) told me he wasn’t trained in sonography but would do his best. He saw the pregnancy and so did I and said that he’s sure it’s in the uterus but when he booked me for another “official” scan he said to not be surprised if it’s ectopic. Now I don’t know what to think!

I’m very surprised that at five weeks anything could be seen at all- that’s why early pregnancy unit won’t generally see you before six. Nothing to do but wait now I’m afraid.

@abimumoftwo I would be reporting this doctor it doesn't sound right that he scanned you without being qualified. It sounds very strange indeed.

I had another doctor present with me and the nurse knew he had scanned me. Just feels like they didn’t have the right person available or something

Hi OP

Did not want to read and run.

I had the same thing, my first scan showed a tiny, tiny sac, they said it was a ‘pregnant of an unknown location’ and asked me to come back 72 hours later. The photo did not show anything tangible in my eyes.

I was scanned again, and there was a definately a sac there!!! The sonographer was so lovely and kind with my concerns and said the pain was on the side I probably ovulated from.
I am now 30 weeks, and counting down the weeks!

All the best with you x

That’s quite normal though if you present at A&E- see if you can get a GP referral to EPU.

@reimah this is so reassuring... thank you! I’m hoping that my scan on Thursday will show me that the little dot is in the right place keeping safe!

@SmidgenofaPigeon hi, this was at the emergency pregnancy unit but going back there on Thursday for a rescan. I’m surprised they could see anything at 5 weeks too

Ah I see- well I really hope Thursday brings you good news x

Just here to say I have the exact same story as @reimah
Good luck!

I don't think this is true - the EPU near us saw me at 4+5 to do a vaginal scan to check for an ectopic.
SmidgenofaPigeon · 31/01/2021 18:36

It’s not ‘not true’ just might be different depending on your area. I haven’t just made that info up.

My local one wouldn’t see me when I was having a miscarriage as I was 5+4- they waited until I was six. They were very clear on that. I appreciate if an ectopic is suspected it might be slightly different but then they also told me that pain in that area can be very normal/common in early pregnancy.
