Baby scan has a pointy face and no nose?

Hi everyone I am expecting my first baby and had my dating scan this with making me at 13+3 they said everything looked fine but they struggled to get the baby to face the right way
After staring at the scan picture ever since I’m worried that the face and nose seem odd. Any advice please?

You have to remember that when they take the screenshot of the baby it could have been moving, so the scan pics can sometimes looks very distorted. I’ve got two pictures from the same scan and one looks like the baby has no nose or features, yet the next one you can clearly see the features defined (I’ll include the 2 pics)

The sonographers are trained to look for things that may look like they haven’t developed properly. I’m sure if there was an issue with the babies face it would have been picked up.

Please try not to worry

A 12w old fetus isn't exactly round and defined like at 20w. It looks human-ish but rarely has a cute face and nose or whatever it is you expected...
Please don't worry about the appearance so early on. The anatomy scan at 20w will be looking at physical characteristics.
It looks like this at this stage and it is very small so scan pictures depending on the angle/quality can look very odd.
(Even later on!)
Unless the sonographer flags something up or express concern, i wouldn't worry.

I had quite a few scans for various reasons throughout my pregnancy. In every single one, DS looked like a malformed alien and barely recognisable as a human. He is, of course, the most perfect and gorgeous little boy in the world.

I can't see the pictures but babies do look strange on scan pics so unless they raised any concerns I wouldn't worry.

Unless they pointed out that there is no nose then it’s probably not the case. 12w ultrasounds don’t give you a full and detailed picture. If the baby moves an arm if can disappear from the ultrasound view but it doesn’t mean the arm is actually missing.

My 12w one looks like there is a gap between the leg and the foot but this obviously isn’t the case.

Try not to worry and stop obsessing over every detail of the scan, it’s easily done but since you don’t know how to read it probably it just causes anxiety and worry!

My 12 week scan photos don't look human, and the scans since aren't much better. Don't worry, if the sonographer spotted anything unusual during the scan they would have raised it at the time or called someone in for a second opinion.

They definitely would have mentioned it if your baby had no nose! Why don't you post the picture and we can look?

Heyahun · 28/01/2021 08:57

Yeah I’m 36 weeks now - had 12,20,28 weeks scans!!

I don’t really like looking at any of them - all look a bit strange and alien like 😂😂 but sonography we said my baby is absolutely fine and all looks well

I totally feel you OP- at the 12 week scan, the midwife mentioned that our baby had their hands in front of their face. I didn’t think much of it at the time as I could see them moving around, but in the scan photo she printed out the hand in front of the face looks like a pointy witch nose! I hate it! I felt so hard done by as I didn’t get the ‘pretty’ scan photo everyone else got 😂

If you’re worried go for a private scan, but it my case I wrote it off as annoying and moved on! Have my 20 week scan soon so fingers crossed that makes up for it!

Justcallmecaptainobvious · 28/01/2021 09:20

Don’t worry, the vast majority of scan photos look odd! I was convinced DS1 was going to be born with a nose the size of his foot (he has a nice normal shape nose).

PurpleMustang · 28/01/2021 14:04

Don't worry, even when they point things out I struggled to see them. You need to remember the primary aim of the scan is to check if anything is wrong and they are highly trained.

PurpleMustang · 28/01/2021 14:06

In a way the 3d ones are even more scary as they look realistic but the sizings can still be off, like nose size etc
