Hi, I went for a viability scan on Sunday, and they said they could see a yolk sac and feral pole, but no heartbeat. And that they would have me back for another next Sunday to make sure it’s not growing 😭 but since that I’ve looked back to when I had an earlier scan because of spotting and on the 5th on jan my paperwork just said ‘less than five weeks pregnant’ instead of actually 5 weeks as I thought. Could this mean that I am actually earlier than I thought and there could be a heartbeat or growth by next Sunday? Just after somebody else’s opinion or if someone else haze been through this please?! I don’t want to give up hope just yet. Any advice welcome xx

Sorry you're going through this OP. If I understood your post correctly you were around 5 weeks on 5th of Jan which would mean you should be around 8 weeks now? If that's the case then there should be a heartbeat visible by now, unless your dates are out by 2 weeks or so - is that possible?

So this means you're 7-8 weeks? It's been 3 weeks since you were 'under 5 weeks'? Was it an internal scan? An internal scan would 99% show a heartbeat by then. I'm very sorry, but it doesn't sound likely to be good news.

I hope there is support for you in real life. Be gentle with yourself.

Yes, I guess I was just hoping as it said ‘less than 5 weeks’ that maybe I would have been three or four at that point, meaning I would be less likely to have seen a heartbeat last Sunday. My periods were irregular before this and I was bad at tracking them.

When did you first get your positive test?
Was anything seen on the scan on the fifth of January?

I got my first positive test on 26th December. And I think my period should have been around 1st of December. On the scan on the 5th there was a gestational sac but that was it. And this scan last Sunday there was a yolk sac and a feral pole.

The day you got your positive would be 3 weeks pregnant at the very earliest, but usually closer to 4 weeks. It is not absolutely impossible, but very rare to miss the heartbeat at 7-8 weeks in a healthy embryo (external scan, inexperienced sonographer etc). Unfortunately you have to prepare for the possibility that this pregnancy may not be viable. Take care
