BFP...now what??

Hi everyone,

So I had my BFP today with baby number 1. I'm not going to tell friends or family get for various reasons but as a result I have no one to talk to about what happens next! I'm already taking folic acid and Vitamin D but what else do I need to do? How do you boom in for scans/midwife tests etc?

Sorry if this is a daft post but feeling quite overwhelmed (but also so very excited and happy!)

Any help would be greatly appreciated xx

Congratulations! Smile

I started taking Pregnacare vitamins as soon as I found out but that's all really. I think you can book in direct with your local maternity service - most have an online form to fill in and they'll contact you for your first appointment.

How long have you been trying? Have you told your partner yet? Such an exciting time!

Chelyanne · 24/01/2021 13:14

It's either see the GP or online self referral to your local midwife team.
Check the website of the hospital you would like to deliver at for a self referral page, if there isn't one contact the GP. They send booking appointments out to you and will refer you for scans and any other appointments after that/those appointments.

Self care, a good pregnancy multivitamin and eat as healthily as you can although that can be difficult once the sickness kicks in. It's fine to continue exercise routines you have in place at reduced intensity. Congrats and good luck

ivfbeenbusy · 24/01/2021 13:17

I'd start the vitamins

I always wait until after 5-6 weeks pregnancy before notifying midwife (but I have a history of miscarriages and it was upsetting to register wks then have to call them back to to cancel).

Some areas you ring the GP and they give you contact email/phone to register with midwife. Other areas you can do it directly

You generally won't hear anything back from them for a while until they are ready to book you in for 8 week (telephone at the moment) appointment to go through all the details which takes an hour or so. They'll then send the info to the hospital who will send you a date for the 12 week scan

Oneandabean · 24/01/2021 13:30

In my area and phone the maternity unit and leave a message. They’ll call you back, ask questions and book you in for 8 week appointment (by phone).

Have a look on your local hospital website- I was able to self refer myself

GreenSlide · 24/01/2021 13:55

This is what I call the 12 week wait! You feel like it's all going to be very exciting once you get your bfp. It isn't Grin

LauEli · 24/01/2021 15:39

@LunaDreams congrats, I just got my bfp on Thursday 😊 it's all a bit boring at the minute. Take folic acid, vitamin d. Ring the docs in a couple weeks, or self refer to midwife team

LunaDreams · 24/01/2021 15:59

Thanks everyone for your responses- it is greatly appreciated!

@ShrimpingViolet- have been trying for a couple of months so feel very, very fortunate that it has happened so quickly. Yes I woke my partner up after his nightshift...he was shocked but very excitedSmile
@GreenSlide- it is funny, I've been expecting some fireworks or something big to happen yet life still seems very similar!
@LauEli- thanks, congratulations to you too. We will be due at a similar time :). I hope you're feeling ok?

I will call GP/maternity services tomorrow. Started vitamins today. Other than that I will just let it all sink in

Thanks for your help all

Hey I'm 4+3 got my BFP on Tuesday. This is my first too so following on here for advice. Happy as it was planned but fell a lot quicker than I expected so now also feeling overwhelmed/nervous and thinking was it too soon to start trying 😩 I haven't told anyone or made any appts yet but I think I will this week x

LunaDreams · 24/01/2021 16:16

@strangerontheinternet- congratulations! Yes it happened quicker than I thought it would too. I was very shocked to get my BFP already but I'm very pleased. It's bound to feel overwhelming for a bit but I figure at least we have 8 or so months to prepare! Hope you're feeling ok? X

strangerontheinternet · 24/01/2021 16:33

Yeah I'm hoping it'll get better snd I'll get used to it but then I just feel bad/guilty for not being like absolutely ecstatic and having these worries. I think I'm also worried about telling family in case they say any of the things I've been thinking then I'll feel shit.

LauEli · 24/01/2021 17:11

@LunaDreams urm, I definitely feel different, aches in boobs and stomach, I have a demanding job though so that will be fun as the weeks progress. Tiredness is fun too. How about you?

@strangerontheinternet it's quite normal to have mixed emotions, as long as your happy about it, I wouldn't worry too much about others opinions.

Here's to the next 8 months 😂

LunaDreams · 24/01/2021 19:48

@LauEli feeling pretty similar to you! I'm still having mild cramping which was my first clue that I may be pregnant- nothing uncomfortable just different...at least I know why now!

@strangerontheinternet it's such a big thing that you're bound to have some worries/negative thoughts mixed in. Don't be too hard on yourself. I've had some real feelings of guilt today due to friends & family having tough times conceiving or with babies. It's not nice to feel at all but you're certainly not alone in feeling like that. Is your partner supportive? Have you got someone you can talk to about it? Besides Mumsnet of course

@LunaDreams thanks yeah I think even people trying for years and really longing for it must have oh shit moments. I am really happy and we were trying so not unplanned. Yeah my partner is really good but he's working away at the moment and also nightshift so we're on opposites at the moment so when I'm awake he's asleep then in the evening he's getting up and starting work and is really busy so we don't get to talk as much and then I worry like omg he's freaking out he's not happy etc but he is very good at reassuring me and he's very laid back and always positive so if I'm like we're going to be skint how will we manage he's like don't worry we will be fine plenty people manage we will etc. I think I'll be better when he's home as he won't allow me to sit worrying or googling 😂 hope you're doing ok xx

penguin7 · 24/01/2021 22:10

@LunaDreams @strangerontheinternet I got my BFP on Saturday morning. I was 16DPO and AF was 2 days late. It's our first and this was our first time trying to conceive. I was so overwhelmed yesterday, feel a bit calmer today.
I think I'm 4wks3days today, was thinking of contacting the doctors tomorrow as I don't know what to do now?

I've started feeling nervous and just want to get through this first trimester and will hopefully start to feel more real as the days go on.

LunaDreams · 25/01/2021 16:25

@penguin7- congratulations on your BFP!!

I've got a GP phone call booked in for tomorrow. I'm hoping it will help me feel better as I've been a nervous wreck today (was fine yesterday!). Such a rollercoaster of emotions! Did you manage to speak to your GP?

@strangerontheinternet it must be tough having your partner working away and not much time to talk. I've felt really up and down today..I just keep telling myself all we can do is tlaw it one day at a time!

@LunaDreams
Hiya...I rang the doctors today and they completed a form to give to the midwife. They said that the midwife is based there on a Friday so she will be in touch.

I've been to work today, I've felt nervous again today and I even woke up this morning and did another pregnancy test!
Don't like this anxiety feeling at all and want it to stop! Just want to reach the 12 weeks and hear that everything is ok/going to be ok. Why am I even having these thoughts that something bad is going to happen or something will be wrong with baby? 😫

horsey92 · 25/01/2021 20:35

@LunaDreams congratulations!
I'm 11 weeks tomorrow, didn't happen as quick for us but was just an anxious when I found out 😂
I self referred as didn't want to go through the gp surgery (used to work there and don't want anyone knowing yet) plus I didn't want to go to the hospital which the gps refer to around here.

I take the boots own brand pregnancy tablets with added omega which are a bit cheaper!
