Hiya,
Was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with being referred for a liver scan in 3rd trimester. I had some blood taken today and just received a call to book in for a liver scan with no more information than just it’s for my liver!?
Any experiences of this sort of thing?
Thanks x

Hasn't happened to me and I don't know what it could be and looking up options won't be helpful I don't think as I'm sure there a several different reasons. You should be able to ask the team that referred you why they have. I've found that half the time when I turn up to follow up appointments the Dr asks me if I know why I'm there because they have no idea!

Obstetric cholestatis? Is that the itchy liver thing some people get in pregnancy?

I had a liver scan when I said the at I had itchy hands and they tested my blood and said it was obstretric cholestasis. I can’t remember what they were actually looking for on my liver but they said it was fine and gave me medication for the OC

SamoyedFan123 · 22/01/2021 13:41

Yes I had this. In my case I had already been suffering with OC for a few weeks but when the blood got worse one week they sent me for a liver scan just in case. I think some trusts do liver scan as standard with OC though. My scan was OK and I think that's its actually quite rare for them to find anything serious (and if they do it's usually indicative that there was a liver problem before pregnancy which caused the OC rather than the other way around). Have you had any itching OP?

Hiya thank you all,
I just got a call from the ultrasound department to book in and when I asked why they said it wasn’t for baby (as I was expecting) but for me but they couldn’t say why as they just got a request for appointment. So I tried to get through to my consultant but couldn’t, spoke to the antenatal reception who just said oh it’s to scan your liver... and no more info than that. I haven’t noticed any more itching than usual (I suffer from Quite dry sensitive skin anyway so am always a bit itchy!) I did have some repeat blood tests done before Christmas due to a slightly raised ALT(I think) and that didn’t flag anything up. Just had a blood test today and the consultant called but didn’t mention anything to do with a liver scan... I know you should never google these things because they always show worst case scenarios! Now I’m worried about all sorts! Hopefully it’s just them being very cautious about things!! 🤞🏻

It was not my usual consultant that called and she had rang before the ultrasound team called so I didn’t know anything about it at that point! Hoping that I might get another call with some
Explanation!

Hi, they will just want to check there is nothing structurally wrong with the liver which is causing your ALT to be high. I do liver scans for this reason all the time and very rare to find an abnormality. Hope this reassures you!

Thank you @Birchtree4 that’s good to know! Fingers crossed it’s nothing then 😊
