False negative pregnancy test?

Hi all
I am now 9 days late on my period. I am usually pretty bang on with my cycle.

Me and my fiancé had unprotected sex on the day my app says I was ovulating.

I have done a couple of tests (far too many to admit to) and everyone has come back negative.

I had a telephone appointment with a male nurse this morning who said it is nothing to worry about, I won’t be pregnant and that his wife went 60 days without a period last year

He told me to wait until next month to see if I come on my period or not.

Has anyone had a similar experience with this and what has been the outcome? We wasn’t trying for a baby as we are saving for our wedding next year but now I’ve had it in my head I think I’ll be disappointed if I’m not pregnant.

It is a lot more common to miss a period/have a late period than it is to get false negatives so more likely that it's just an odd cycle. I had a missed period while TTC - I think due to stress in my case - and have had a few over the years while not TTC. There are cases where women don't test positive for a very long time or at all and that could be you, but they are rare. Only time will tell unfortunately.

Thank you for your message! I think maybe deep down my gut is telling me it’s just a missed period but I am hoping it is something more! The nurse advised leaving it a week and taking another test but the anticipating is so hard ahhh x

Possible it is just a late period but I defo had 2 false negatives with this pregnancy. I was 99.9% sure I was pregnant, sore boobs, late period so took a test, was a wee cheap one no big brand but came back negative. I still wasnt overly convinced so i waited 4 or 5 days and bought a digital clear blue test which came back negative. I was so shocked but thought then i musnt be pregnant. A week later I still hadnt had a period and i had started feeling sick so took another clear blue digital test and it came up I was 3+ weeks pregnant, but yet the same test 1 week before said not pregnant. False negs can defo happen, i was maybe to early with first test but dunno what happened with 2nd. Your just gunna have to wait a week or so and do another test.

Thanks so much! I certainly don’t feel like I am going to come on my period. My boobs have gotten sore the last few days, I’ve been abit dizzy and seem to have lost my appetite. I also have like a pressure feeling rather than period pains. It’s so hard when you’ve never been pregnant before because I have nothing to compare it to! I will wait another week and see then! Thank you x

I would say that many days late it is likely to be accurate. However do test again in a week to make sure.

I have just read the thread and wonder what happened in your case? I am same, we have been ttc. This month my period is late but tests are negative I did one on my due date negative I waited 3 days and did another and thought I could see a very faint line but I did it in afternoon after drinking a lot of fluid so did another next morning and nothing. Still no period. I have sore boobs heavy feeling in lower abdomen but query etc. Ive had 3 children and I feel pregnant. So frustrating

Did you test positive in the end? I am 4 days overdue my period, and have never been this late or had boobs this swollen before, but both the tests I've done so far have been negative. I'm going to try and wait another 3 days to test but really curious to know if you had false negative tests? Thanks

I didnt get a positive test until 2 weeks after my expected period was due. I also didn't have any obvious early pregnancy signs until after my positive test so just assumed the initial tests were correct and I wasn't pregnant. I only tested again at the second week because i had never been so late before.

My advice is to wait a week and try again. :)

@Taenia - thanks hun this gives me hope. It sounds like it must have been a bit of a shock for you to find out you were pregnant after all!

@Portlandia Oh yes! It was a huge shock.. which felt silly at the time as we were trying, although hadn't expected it to happen so quickly. It was over a week before I could even talk about it I was very overwhelmed lol and I ended up taking 3 more tests in case the first one was wrong..

Got there in the end now, I'm 9 weeks now and although still terrified I am excited and much more chatty about it :D

@Taenia, my period arrived 5 days late, (boooo), been cramping and mostly bed ridden for 48 hours now darn it. Fingers crossed for next time.

@Portlandia so sorry to hear that ill keep my fingers crossed and hope for next time for you. Always feels unfair when the body messes with you like that. :)

Yeah all is okay here thank you, finding new ways to try and manage morning sickness and it seems eating constantly is the way forward :)

@FitMum27 were you pregnant in the end?

I am on day 3 of missed period and testing negative. I have covid so I wonder if that has delayed my period. It's also hard to tell how I actually feel due to having covid!

We have tried at the right times so hoping for a false negative.

So basically. I’ve been on the drop injection for 3 months. It was due again in September but I was in hospital with sepsis and it completely slipped my mind. 30th October my period started. For 12 days I was bleeding. Now I’ve had no period since. Meaning from the last bleed I’m now 21 days late. However 10 days ago I had a mucusy pinky blood on my tissue when I wiped which looked like implantation bleeding. I have had unprotected sex Atleast 2/3 times a week. I tested about a week after the implantation bleeding look alike and got a negative. I just don’t know what to do. As I feel pregnant. I’ve already had two children so I know what my body goes like. I feel really nauseous, my nipples are tingling, I have an upset belly, I’m crying all the time. Any advice on what to do ? When I should test ? Or is this all just part of coming off the depot injection.
