20 week scan

I have my 20 week scan in a few weeks and I didn't take the screening test in my first trimester for Down's syndrome or edwards syndrome. Do conditions like this get picked up at 20 week scans or through routine blood tests? I didn't take the screening test as it won't affect the outcome of my pregnancy. Just wondering if there is a way to find out other than the screening test the further along you are in your pregnancy?

The anomaly scan can pick up some cases of such syndromes but not all. If you're having 2nd thoughts about knowing if there is a high risk for your baby you can request the blood tests doing before 20 weeks.

Thank you, I have my 2nd midwife appointment next week so I'll ask her then for advice

I've just had the second trimester screening blood test done and it was only for downs, not Edwards and patau's (sp?)
I know they do check for these at the anomoly scan, although they're only looking for clues so it's not definitive.

As above I believe the blood test is only for Downs Syndrome. Edwards and Patau's they usually try measure the back of the baby's skull I'm sure it is at the 12 week scan. No idea if they can check it at 20 weeks or not. My baby wouldn't stop moving at the 12 weeks one long enough for them to see so I had the blood test done for DS and they never mentioned measuring anything for the others at the 20 weeks, I'm sure if you ask they may be able to though

Thank you! I'll ask my midwife at my next appointment x

Thank you, I'm 25 so I know my risk is low in that sense but just wondering if it would be picked up in scans. I read that they can notice some abnormalities so I'm sure if there was any they would let me know or have said in the 12 week. Thank you for your advice x

@nervousfirsttime yeah if they were able to get the measurement of the back of the skull in the 12 week scan then they wouldn't have needed to do the bloods. I'm surprised they never mentioned to you though whether they got it or not but they've maybe not been able to, with mine the baby was moving loads so wouldn't stay still long enough for them to measure!
I had the blood test done at 14 weeks and it came back low risk, I'm 22. At the 20 week scan they never mentioned the other 2 syndromes but it was amazing what they could see. They checked baby's brain, kidneys, spine, face and took loads of different measurements. It was amazing what they could see! Luckily everything looked healthy! If they have any concerns they will tell you at your scan. I would ask your midwife about it though and whether they'll check for the syndromes at your scan and if not if you want the DS bloods done you can ask her then x

You could always do Harmony or other NIPT test for these syndromes. More accurate as well but it will be private. It is just a blood test to test the fetal’s dna for these conditions

Thank you so much that's so reassuring. I'm 25 so I don't think I'll be high risk. But good to know what they can show you at your scans and that if they had any concerns they would have told me. It's such a nervous time! I'll definitely speak to my midwife and see what she says xx
