34 week growth scan - small head circumference

Hi everyone,

I had a growth scan today at 34+1. At 20 weeks baby's head circumference was at about the 70th centile and is now plotting at the 3rd centile. Sonographer and consultant didn't even mention anything and I've only seen it when I got home.

I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or any advice.

Thanks in advance!

At an early gestation the head tends to grow quicker than the rest of the body as the brain is the most important organ and is "oversized" if you like - gradually the rest of the body catches up - so your measurements sound fine

This happened to me. The explanation was if everything else is good then it's not a measurement they're too worried about. As baby is (usually) head down and grown loads at this stage it's harder to get a proper reading. I went back 4 weeks later. The sonographer took the measurement but didn't even plot it on my notes.

I wouldn't worry unless they say you have something to worry about Smile

Thank you for the replies, I'm ready to have baby now so I don't have to worry - I could barely sleep last night 😔

Should I expect anymore monitoring or will they just leave it now?

Hi @BL89 ,

How is your baby doing now? My baby's head circumference has dropped below 3 percentile when everything else is on the 50% percentile during my 34 weeks scan. I've been so stressed ever since then.
Would be great to hear how your turned out?

Hi @hopeful02

I've had two babies and both have plotted very low and both have been perfectly in proportion. They've still got petite heads and my almost 2 year old is in up to 12 month hats but again, perfectly in proportion!

Depending on babies position they may be a bit squished too!

Best of luck and congratulations!

@BL89 - that's really reassuring to know. I have been honestly stressing myself about the likelihood of my baby being born with some sort of abnormality and if I google they show microcephaly everywhere.

Can I ask how much percentile your babies were at birth if you remember? And if that went up or stayed the same?

Both were born on the 25th centile. My daughter tracked on the 9th and my son on the 2nd centile (we've had feeding issues so slowly gaining). I honestly wouldn't worry, they measured me and told me he was around the 90th centile.

Both their weights went down but again, they're in proportion 😊
