When should partner be able to feel a kick?

I am 20w6d pregnant, mine and my partners first baby. Before my 20 week scan my partner felt like it wasn't entirely real as he hasn't been able to be involved with anything due to covid. Now we have been to the 20 week scan he is very happy and soo excited! He just can't wait to feel a kick... when should he be able to feel this and what's the best way to get him to feel it? As baby isn't kicking constantly throughout the day/night.

Quite late in my experience, last couple of months? And all my babies immediately stopped kicking as soon as someone touched my belly Grin

Try having a cold drink just before he wants to feel baby move.
They do seem to have a sixth sense of when others want to feel them and stop lol.

This is my first pregnancy too and I could feel him from quite early on. The only pattern he had at the start was in the evenings, after dinner, I would put my feet up and he would start - essentially when I was relaxed. And because we were on the sofa, I could grab DH's hand and straight away and leave it there until he kicked again. So the best way to do it is when he starts, just get your partner to leave his hand on your bump until he feels it. Could take a few mins.

But @Chelyanne is right - they do somehow stop! My mum has never felt him! I think they also sense scans as every scan I've had, he's always face down!

I had anterior placenta with DD, so DH couldn't feel her moving until quite late - after 30 weeks or so.

AprilBundle · 15/01/2021 11:26

Mine started to feel it at around 24 wks. I'm 26/27 now and was able to video it a few days ago, it was the tiniest of movements like a little wobble/ up and down boop Grin

CLeighannHxo · 15/01/2021 11:52

I am able to feel the movements myself internally but maybe it's still a little early for my partner to feel it for himself.
I just think it's hard when you don't know exactly when the baby is going to move/kick lol, I'll just get my partner to keep his hand on bump! 🥰 haha
@AprilBundle you must have been quick with your camera to capture it 😀

Any time from 24 weeks is normal but will depend on your size and where your placenta is.

Livingmagicallyagain · 15/01/2021 13:32

Around 18 or 19 weeks from the outside for me, baby only active enough in the evening/morning though. 27 weeks now and it's very obviously felt!

SunnySideUp2020 · 15/01/2021 13:37

I have anterior placenta and first felt kicks myself around 20w and DH could feel her 10 days later I'd say.
I was surprised.
I mean it's not a foot coming out. You feel the bumping inside on the outside.
You should also see your belly moving like vibrating and he should put his hand where th3 belly moves.

IndieRo · 15/01/2021 13:38

It was 21 weeks on my DD2. I can't remember on the other two. Hmm

Honeydukesmum · 15/01/2021 14:13

I only just felt my 3rd at 20 weeks but at 21 weeks my partner and 2 toddlers felt it fit first time so a quick change . Posterior placenta .

Anterior with my 2 girls and was a lot later

LuckyFlash · 15/01/2021 15:04

From about 22 weeks for us. DH says it’s easier to feel with his head than his hand so he likes to lie with his head on my belly and have a little chat with the wee man which is cute. He can now also sometimes hear his fast little heart beat at 27 weeks which is nice because that’s something only he gets to experience (I certainly can’t get down there 😂)

lucymagoo · 15/01/2021 15:30

About 18-19 weeks for me, again as others have said he stops kicking the second my husband puts his hand on my belly usually Grin I'm 22 weeks now and getting some huge kicks that are hard to miss, won't be long!

CLeighannHxo · 15/01/2021 16:03

Aww thank you for your replies ladies 😊 I can't wait for my partner to feel the baby kick for the first time... I'll just get him to keep his hand there for awhile 😅

@CLeighannHxo well it was having a merry old dance so I thought if I was patient enough I could capture it on my phone which I did Xx

Kimblebee19 · 15/01/2021 17:10

My boy used to love kicking daddy. Whenever he'd put pressure on my tummy with his hand he'd be kicking him. Used to lay on my side at night with bump touching his back and he'd be kicking away at him Grin he's 2 now and its hasnt stopped haha...
Get your DH to press down a bit where you're feeling kicks and keep his hand there a while.

Mimba1 · 15/01/2021 17:34

I don't think there's a right time and it will depend on when you start feeling proper movements (which is really variable for different people!) They get bigger and stronger from there so probably a couple of weeks after that.

I have a posterior placenta, normal BMI (higher end but normal) and quite an active baby (usually) from what I can tell. FTM.

I felt first something that made me wonder "is that the baby?" at 15 weeks

Started feeling proper kicks that were 100% baby at 17 weeks

DH first felt them at 18 weeks. Like another poster said, at the beginning more of the bigger movements were in the evening on the sofa, particularly if baby could hear DH's voice. I realised I could feel him with my hand so grabbed DH's hand and we were lucky LO kicked him back straight away. You could see my tummy moving from about 19 weeks which is a bit odd! LO definitely responds better to a warm hand than a cold one - he'll roll about merrily with warm hands on my bump and freeze completely if you put anything cold on him. I'd say get comfy with DH's hand on your bump at a "busy" time and wait and see.

Now 28 wks and it's pretty easy for either of us to feel the kicks most days (except when he's terrifying me by refusing to move like this morning).

It is lovely though - DH's expression was priceless!

CLeighannHxo · 18/01/2021 10:52

So last night my partner felt our baby kick for the first time at 21w1d! 😁 We were laid in bed watching TV, he had been laying there with his hand on my bump for ages but had felt nothing, when my partner had rolled over the over way to get comfy to go to sleep... I felt a kick so I said to him quick put your hand there... after a few minutes he felt baby kick, his reaction was priceless! 😁🥰
