Hi all,

Hoping someone can help.

I’ve got my Gestational Diabetes test next Thursday and I called the midwife to check it was still going ahead what with all the lockdown stuff happening.
She said yes it will still being going ahead but it’s just a blood test and home, no hanging about or yucky drink to take. I laughed and came off the phone.

But now I’m thinking just how do they test for diabetes from just a blood test, surely they need to measure my glucose from said drink.

I’m sure they are the experts and know what they are doing but I’m just a bit confused by it all.

Thanks 😊

The GTT is testing your reaction to glucose after a fast so they must be doing an alternative test instead. They may give you more information when you go in. Sounds odd to me, I've had several GTT's in previous pregnancies and all normal results so wouldn't be too bothered if they didn't want to do one this time.

I've been told the same, my GD test will be a blood test without fasting. Apparently if they see anything in the blood sugar levels that is concerning they will then ask you to do another blood test after fasting. I was confused about how this works too but I trust that they know what they are doing 😊
