Birthday glass of Prosecco

Bear with me here - pregnancy number two and I didn't touch a drop of alcohol with my first. I'm 14 weeks pregnant and tomorrow is my birthday. I really fancied a taste of Prosecco and was putting it to the back of my mind until a friend said if I'm eating, just to go for it.

I'm inclined not to and I know what the NHS say, but I just wondered what people do in reality!

Apologies fembot, I had just assumed it was that you were referring to rather than all the other bits

Fembot123 · 14/01/2021 20:32

No worries, I don’t see an issue with what the OP is suggesting and I bet she’ll savour that one drink.

Itsabloodybingthing · 14/01/2021 20:35

OP I recommend you try this ....

I had it a few times throughout my pregnancy. I loved it and have never ever ever found anything to remotely resemble Prosecco/Asti but I really enjoyed this.
@Veterinari would you have a cigarette then? Because the same can be said about having the odd cigarette. I'm sorry but alcohol damages cells and damages your liver. The NHS states that there is no safe limits for a reason. Why would they advocate women drinking something that is a known toxin. You can argue all you want that one glass will cause no lasting damage and I agree with you. But it still does something. It will still affect cells in some small way. Women cant help exposure to pollutants in the air, they don't have to drink or smoke. Its 9 months. It's not long to wait.
Missed this but no, I wouldn't have a cigarette, because I don't smoke. Simples.

But I also wouldn't tell someone who had one cigarette during a 9 month pregnancy that they were poisoning their baby.

I think it's called being nice.

Although FWIW the evidence on that is clearer for example even one cigarette can increase risks of SIDs. So your point is moot as you're comparing apples and oranges

Thank you @Itsabloodybingthing - I've only had alcohol free muscat so far and it was very sweet! I will try. I found the the alcohol free Heineken nice but to be honest have sort of gone of the taste of them so have just been drinking squash.

So I was poured an inch of Prosecco my by husband, took a sip, and - yuck! Just didn't taste good so had a dandelion and burdock instead. I've caused arguments for nothing, sorry guys 😬

As a comment though, I agree with PP who said that there are toxins and poisons in lots of things. Had I have drunk it I don't think half a glass of Prosecco with burrata, bread, oil and a a shed load of pasta would have left my baby irrevocably damaged. The stress and grief I have experienced the last few weeks over my mum's death have left me far more worried about my baby as I've been so unbearably sad. It's judgement and balance, not being unable to go 9 months without a drink, in the same way I still like a warm bath and am not actively trying to damage my baby.

Ps I had a mouthful of prosciutto with my food, now worrying about that 😂

I had a glass of bubbly on my wedding anniversary the night before DS (12) was born. Like you, I really fancied it and it was a one-off.

Look after yourself OP, and enjoy your prosciutto, hot bath. And D&B (haven't had that since I was a kid!)

@Veterinari neither had I - weird craving! Try the Fentimans one if you fancy it, it's really good.

Thank you for your kind words x

I haven’t read all the responses, but there are absolutely LOTS of peer reviewed papers online about this. In summary... obviously lots of alcohol is bad, but there is no evidence whatsoever that a single drink here and there causes harm... in fact, there is some evidence that Mums who have the occasional small drink during pregnancy (defined as 1-2 units no more than once a week) have children with higher IQs (fairly obviously the alcohol doesn’t make them smarter... it’s probably to do with the cohort... but still!).

You may be interested to know that the advice on this only changed recently, and it was a scandal at the time because it was a political decision and not an evidence based one... it was part of the Department of Health’s drive to reduce alcohol consumption across the UK, and pregnant women were seen as a “soft target”. The Royal College of Midwives actually issued a statement against the new advice, as they were concerned that it would cause unnecessary (and non evidence based) anxiety to women who had a small amount of alcohol before they realised they were pregnant etc.

In summary, your call... if you’re worried then download some peer review from Google Scholar... but there is no evidence indicating that 1-2 occasional units causes harm.

I wouldn't but that's me
