Birthday glass of Prosecco

Bear with me here - pregnancy number two and I didn't touch a drop of alcohol with my first. I'm 14 weeks pregnant and tomorrow is my birthday. I really fancied a taste of Prosecco and was putting it to the back of my mind until a friend said if I'm eating, just to go for it.

I'm inclined not to and I know what the NHS say, but I just wondered what people do in reality!

One glass is absolutely fine, enjoy! If you're worried maybe get some bucks fizz? Still get that bubbly feeling but it's a lot weaker. I enjoyed a bucks fizz at Christmas and I will be having a glass of prosecco for my birthday!

PinkPurpleOrangeBrownBlue · 14/01/2021 08:40

I had the odd glass on special occasions whilst pregnant but nothing during the first 12 weeks. My GP said that once or twice after 12 weeks is fine but nothing before then as that’s when the baby does the biggest amount of growing/developing.

One glass wouldn’t hurt; I’d have it with a meal though otherwise it’s likely to go to your head

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 14/01/2021 08:41

@happymummy12345 I think you may have a little problem!

MsMiaWallace · 14/01/2021 08:46

No, why would you? If you saw the effect just one glass has on the foetus you'd be made to.

MsMiaWallace · 14/01/2021 08:47

^^ mad to not made to

Pastwordprotected · 14/01/2021 08:49

There is a non-alcoholic version called Nosecco that is a pretty close substitute

SmidgenofaPigeon · 14/01/2021 08:49

What effect does one glass have on the foetus? I don’t know if you’ve got a scientific link but if not I shall google.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 14/01/2021 08:51

No I wouldn't, really not worth it.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 14/01/2021 08:53

I think like a PP said I might not actually enjoy it as much as I want to incase it makes me anxious which is a fun-sponge. I got some alcohol-free Gordon’s and tonic thing the other day, going to have that this weekend while DH enjoys his proper version.

andadietcoke · 14/01/2021 08:53

I remember going out for a Nice Meal to Gaucho after my 14 week scan - had to go back because of issues with one twin's measurements.

I made that glass of Prosecco last the whole meal and really really enjoyed it. I also had medium rare steak Shock (don't recommend it, I now have 7yo DTs who are obsessed with rare steak and were officially the first children to go to Hawksmoor Manchester because we were invited to the soft opening. They were about 18m and were eating ridiculously expensive fillet).

Basically yes to Prosecco, but don't eat anything fancy Wink

I'm sorry for your loss. It must be an incredibly hard time.

Lib3rtine · 14/01/2021 08:58

I've had the odd half a glass of prosecco since getting to third trimester. If you fancy a glass, you're over 12 weeks so it'll be absolutely fine. Guidance used to be different, they only changed it to no alcohol as they were concerned people didn't know what units were

Max271 · 14/01/2021 09:19

Check out Emily Oster's Expecting Better.

@Ritasueandbobtoo9

Alcohol damages the developing foetus. It might be low risk to drink just one but you need to ask yourself why would you need to drink at all?
@Ritasueandbobtoo9

Please share your evidence that a single glass of wine damages the developing foetus.

I'm sure the NHS and public health bodies will be interested as that evidence doesn't actually exist.

MimiDaisy11 · 14/01/2021 09:23

Sorry for your loss. There's a low alcohol prosecco version. It's something like 0.5% alcohol, so a glass of that would be more guilt-free than the regular stuff.

There's a big difference between having one glass on one or two occasions versus drinking and smoking throughout pregnancy - as some people say here. Sure you could smoke and drink throughout and everything turns out "fine", but really you don't know if your child would have been different had you not (higher IQ, growth etc).

Bluntness100 · 14/01/2021 09:26

One glass is fine.

I am quite shocked someone is advocating smoking and drinking throughout. Clearly you shouldn’t do that.

Jobsharenightmare · 14/01/2021 09:31

I wouldn't because I would never actively choose a toxin over my developing baby's wellbeing. But I am sorry for your loss and hope you can have a happy birthday.

Bellaphant · 14/01/2021 09:31

It's fine. I have friends who are doctors, and they all have said that a glass here and there is fine - that the NHS can't say 'its ok if you are sensible' because everyone's limit is so different: as someone said, the occasional glass of something (I had probably....ten small glasses of watered down wine during the whole pregnancy, but a couple of ciders/shandies), whereas someone else's 'sensible' is - I normally drink two bottles a week and now I'm pregnant I'm only drinking one!

TheDaydreamBelievers · 14/01/2021 09:35

Alcohol is a teratogen - a substance that kills, changes the movement of, or modifies cells. A baby in utero is a bundle of developing cells with places to go, which develop throughout the 9 months (particularly the brain). So there is no safe time to drink or safe amount.

That said, very low levels of alcohol have not been associated with significant differences in the child (whether in terms of brain function, behaviour, or physical changes). Your glass of prosecco is unlikely to have any noticeable effects. The alcohol will still be changing/destroying/moving cells as that's what it does, but the impact from one glass will be v small.

Mammaaof · 14/01/2021 09:40

I really don't understand why you would, why put a glass of alcohol before your unborn child. If you can't go 9 months without alcohol, you need to reassess your decisions

wimbler · 14/01/2021 09:43

One glass on a rare occasion is fine. In conversations like this I always recommend the book "expecting better" by emily oster. It goes into all the statistics of risk behind avoidable foods and drinks during pregnancy. It really helps to inform so you can make a fact based decision based on your own perception of risk.

Skyla01 · 14/01/2021 09:50

I would enjoy a glass now and again if you want to. It is unlikely to cause any harm. I've been enjoying the odd small glass of something now and again.

I remember reading an article a while ago where they found drinking 7 units a day for the duration of pregnancy resulted in harm to baby. There is a huge difference between say 1-2 units a month and 7 units a day!

TheDaydreamBelievers · 14/01/2021 09:57

To slightly correct @Skyla01 - the diagnostic guidelines on saying a child has had their neurodevelopmental affected by alcohol is: 6 or more units on 3 or more occasions. That's quite a bit less than 7 units a day. It also doesnt mean that lower amounts do no harm, just not statistically significant harm.

Skyla01 · 14/01/2021 10:03

@TheDaydreamBelievers I'm sure there are multiple studies on the topic & I believe we are talking about different ones. Admittedly I have not researched the area extensively.

luxxlisbon · 14/01/2021 10:12

@MsMiaWallace

No, why would you? If you saw the effect just one glass has on the foetus you'd be made to.
What effect is that then? There is no study that definitively shows this.
