Birthday glass of Prosecco

Bear with me here - pregnancy number two and I didn't touch a drop of alcohol with my first. I'm 14 weeks pregnant and tomorrow is my birthday. I really fancied a taste of Prosecco and was putting it to the back of my mind until a friend said if I'm eating, just to go for it.

I'm inclined not to and I know what the NHS say, but I just wondered what people do in reality!

Enjoy it, if you want to!

I found Expecting Better to be a really good read for the actual science behind all the things we should/shouldn't do. 1-2 units once or twice a week is considered okay. The NHS has to say no alcohol as apparently pregnant women cant be trusted to know how much alcohol they are drinking. An average glass of prosecco is less than 2 units. Drink slowly, with food or a full stomach. After 12 weeks only. FAS has only been found in cases where pregnant women frequently drank between 3 and 7 units minimum in one sitting. 7 units is more than half a bottle of wine!

Thank you for your replies - I was intending it to be just half a glass with supper, I'm not planning on drowning my unborn baby in a litre of gin!

@londonmummy1234 quite agree, my standards have slipped 😂

I'm somewhat questioning which has more toxins, the intended few sips of fizz or the McDonalds sausage McMuffin meal I had for a birthday breakfast. My guilty pleasure 🙈

@Smoa9

www.healthline.com/health-news/theres-no-safe-amount-of-drinking-during-pregnancy again here suggests no amount of drinking is safe after comparing a variety of studies
And yet if you read the actual research rather than the click-bait media headline, the authors conclude:

The studies included in this review do not provide evidence on whether the effect of alcohol exposure is linear, or whether there is a safe threshold for drinking in pregnancy

And

Although it remains true that the only way to avoid alcohol-related risks to the fetus is to abstain from alcohol during pregnancy, it is also important to communicate both to mothers-to-be and healthcare professionals that there remains uncertainty in the evidence base for this recommendation

I.e. there is no clear evidence that suggests that a single glass of wine has any detrimental effects.

Veterinari · 14/01/2021 17:30

Most of the studies in that meta analysis were FAS studies. Totally irrelevant to the OP

Flittingaboutagain · 14/01/2021 17:52

Well I think you can see there is a split here and many of us wouldn't.

MsMiaWallace · 14/01/2021 19:26

@Veterinari I find it rather odd you are very defensive of this.

I am simply pointing out misinterpretation of science and opinion presented as fact.

I'm not a believer in 'bad science' or 'opinion over evidence' especially when that opinion is used to needlessly and unkindly judge someone or call them names.

You can take that as 'defensive' if you like, since you seem keen to label and judge 🤷‍♀️

I’d agree

The sanctimonious ones who’d never touch a drop of alcohol are often the ones happily ingesting bad foods, and no decent vegetables or omega 3’s

(N.B: This is based on my limited experience and not a population wide study)

Smoa9 · 14/01/2021 19:51

Oh for god sake. McDonalds is food at the end of the day ( not that I eat it). Alcohol is poison, it kills cells. I think you lot must clearly have a problem if you can't drop this. All your justifying is probably just guilt that you can't go 9 months without a drink. Ridiculous.

Smoa9 · 14/01/2021 19:51

It's not sanctimonious its flipping following guidelines. Get a grip.

Smoa9 · 14/01/2021 19:52

And your opinion that the NHS only says avoid alcohol is because women dont know their limits is bs too. Can't be bothered with all you self righteous women

Veterinari · 14/01/2021 20:05

Says the person with 3 posts in a row.
Honestly, relax and have a WineGrin

Onedropbeat · 14/01/2021 20:12

Lots of things are poisons which we are ‘allowed’ to consume during pregnancy

There’s plenty of research and evidence of it being beneficial too

There are other countries that guidelines reflect that

SmidgenofaPigeon · 14/01/2021 20:13

Christ alive @Smoa9 maybe try to chill. It’s half a glass of Prosecco, on one occasion, no one’s suggested injecting heroine into their eyeballs. Your reaction is way over the top.

Onedropbeat · 14/01/2021 20:14

Alcohol is as much food as sugar is food

As sugar is poison to alcohol being poison

I would also argue that the bad trans fats in a Mac Donald’s does more damage to a woman then a small glass of wine

Onedropbeat · 14/01/2021 20:17

It’s posts like Samoa’s that stressed me out massively when I was pregnant with number one as I’d seen someone spouting similar after I’d just treated myself to half a Guinness after a stressful 20 week scan and I then had weeks of worry because I thought I’d caused damage

Luckily, I along with many others didn’t cause damage.

I then spent a lot of time researching and asking HCP on the guidelines and reasons behind them and found much reassurance for subsequent pregnancies, which is why I wouldn’t want someone being so bullish about half a glass being poison to someone when that could cause more stress than the ‘poison’ itself would cause

Onedropbeat · 14/01/2021 20:18

Caffeine is poison too. But people don’t harp on about an occasional Diet Coke or cup of tea

Fembot123 · 14/01/2021 20:18

@happymummy12345

I did. But then I drank throughout my pregnancy as well. Nowhere near as much as usual, and weaker drinks than usual. By which I mean I have a very high alcohol tolerance and rarely get drunk or hangovers. Id have to drink all evening and all night for that to happen. Even then I don't get hangovers and I've never not remembered anything, I always remember regardless of how much I've had to drink. So usually if I have a spirit and mixer I make it strong, between a double and treble, poured freehand. But I made them weak, so a single or less. Or with wine I'd have a small bit topped right up with lemonade. But no way was I not having a drink for 9 months, especially at my wedding. My mum drank and smoked as normal throughout all 3 of her pregnancies. My Nan the same both times. All fine. And I know others who have as well.
Wow 😮
Onedropbeat · 14/01/2021 20:20

Why would watered down wine and diluted g&t be wow?

Veterinari · 14/01/2021 20:21

Exactly!

I hope that the sanctimonious posters shouting 'poison' and 'selfish' are unaware of the risks of stress and cortisol in the unborn baby. If not then their behaviour is deliberately risking the health of unborn babies as they deliberately stress out expectant mothers

Heyahun · 14/01/2021 20:23

Ah it’s fine!

I had a lovely cocktail on Xmas day (28weeks)

And one for my husbands birthday this week

bellsbuss · 14/01/2021 20:24

A glass is fine , with my first 3 children you were allowed to drink during pregnancy. With my 4th it had changed to don't have anything , I had about 5-6 glasses throughout.

bellsbuss · 14/01/2021 20:24

Oh and enjoy Smile

Fembot123 · 14/01/2021 20:25

No brain activity 😂😂 wtf!!?

Is that the only thing her post refers to..no.
