Pregnant on copper coil?

Hi everyone,

I should have come on my period at the beginning of January (around the 1st or second) but I didn’t come on.

I was a bit concerned as I’ve only had the coil since September but I’ve had a regular period on it as it is not hormonal. I took a test because that’s always gonna be the first thing they ask if I called with my concerns and got the FAINTEST second line ever. I assumed evap line so I’ve taken 3 more tests. All in all 3/4 tests showed a second line and they are all different brands.

I rang the clinic I got the coil from who said I need an emergency scan and blood test to determine whether I’m pregnant or something else is going on, but the doctor from the clinic said in 30 years she’s only ever seen two false positive tests.

I then rang my GP who arranged bloods for today to be taken but said it wasn’t an emergency.

I rang back the clinic who said to go to a&e for a scan.

I went to a&e last night and the doctor was awful. She basically made me feel like I was lying and then would said ‘well I guess SOMEONE has to be the exception of a contraception working’ she then said she could see the second line on the photos of my tests but that it was faint so it wasn’t a positive result? This was 10pm last night. She then said if doing a urine test to do it in the morning as if you do it later and I’m early on (I’d be around 4/5 weeks) it would be negative. She then did a test at 10pm last night and it was negative so she just sent me home?

I’m so confused. I can clearly see the lines on the tests even if they are faint, I’ve missed my period. But also I’m struggling to believe it’s a possibility because I have the coil.

Also if I’m not pregnant, what else could cause a positive test? I’m so stressed 😭

Also, when I was pregnant with my daughter I had really faint tests until I was around 6 weeks, my first positive with her was so faint me and my ex argued about if there was even a line

Two things - is being pregnant a disaster? Would you need to terminate?

Secondly can you just wait 2-3 weeks and see what happens?

Wigglywoman · 13/01/2021 16:08

Hi movingonup.

It is definitely not a disaster, would not be planned (been with current partner 5 months, we got the coil to be safe and I’ve just started uni!) but the issue is if you’re pregnant on the coil it’s more likely to be eptopic, which is my big concern - I could definitely wait but I am very stressed because eptopics can turn nasty so fast and I’ve got a 2 year old I’m worried about leaving if the worse happened 😭

Just to make you feel like it isn't just you, I was convinced when my mom had the copper coil, granted it was a long time ago but it does happen!

I hope you get whatever outcome you want to get!

conceived not convinced 😂

She had to have a scan and the coil removed and more scan but other than that everything was fine

123deepbreath, the nurse who saw me last night also has a brother who is a coil baby!

I just don’t feel pregnant, and I’m stressed as to why I’d get faint positives if I’m not?! I feel like I’m going insane and just wasting their time! I wish I could put photos of the tests on here!

There you go then, definitely not as uncommon as the doctor thinks!

What colour dye are the tests, blue or pink? Blue tests are more likely to throw up odd evap lines than pinks? Don't know if that may provide some idea? If not can you get a FRER and test tomorrow morning or the day after with FMU?

I had a lovely copper IUD in place when my third conceived.

I fell pregnant with twins after having a copper coil fitted, had my 12 week scan around 1 year after my fitting date. I didn't go to docs until I was a few weeks late with a strong positive and they measured over 7 weeks when I did get scanned. There was no sign of my coil on scans though so I was one of those odd ones who lost it at some point. My cousins friend had the same issue with losing one but no unplanned pregnancy. So it's rare but very possible. Only time will tell though

I’ve done 2 blue tests and one pink, all three different brands. One of the blues was clearly blue and although the line is faded a bit (it’s a few days old, the control line has faded a bit too) there is a strong blue line on one side of the positive line, similarly to how there always seems to be a stronger blue line on one side of the control line if that makes sense?
But there’s a line on the pink dye too!

I would do a early morning urine test ( to make sure) and go back to the early pregnancy unit rather than a&e
