5mg Folic Acid

My midwife has said I need to take 5mg of folic acid until 12 due to a high bmi. She mentioned that I might be able to buy these over the counter to avoid making a doctors appointment - has anyone been able to get hold of these without a prescription?

Thanks!

You can't buy 5mg unfortunately, it's prescription only. You can only buy the 400mcg strength

I'm pretty sure you'd need a prescription for 5mg of folic acid. You can't buy it over the counter at that strength.

Perhaps phone your GP, explain the situation and what your MW has advised and they will write you a prescription.

If you're already pregnant though, a high dose of folic acid now won't stop any neural tube defects as that happens at about 28 days post conception. (These are incredibly rare though, so really don't worry about that unnecessarily.)

Agreed it's prescription only. I was also told to take vitamin D. I emailed my GP and they did a telephone appointment to prescribe.

Thanks everyone - I was surprised when she suggested it as last time I needed a prescription! I'll phone up on Monday.
