Hello,

I went for an early scan yesterday as I was having pains on my right side so the doctor sent me for an early scan to make sure everything was as it was.
I thought I was 4 weeks and 6 days but turns out I’m measuring at 5 weeks and 5 days.
She did an abdominal scan and could only see the gestational sac and nothing else, she had a look around and the first thing she said well it’s definitely not ectopic because the sac is in the right place and also said it’s too early to see anything right now because I’m so early on and everything is looking good and she’s not concerned. She then did an internal one but she didn’t say anything about the sac this time she was looking at my ovaries and found that they look a bit like they have PCOS and that was it but I was so tired and feeling so run down I didn’t ask many questions and now I’m so mad at myself I didn’t!
But she said everything looks okay and good and she can’t see anything because the early, I have another scan now booked for Sunday 17/01/2021 and I’m hoping for the best, did this happen to anyone else and have a good outcome? Need some positive stories as I’m feeling a bit deflated now as the anxiety just keeps kicking in all the time :(
Thanks!

Wanted to add too that the symptoms I’m experiencing are tiredness like extreme find it hard to stay awake, mild to no cramping anymore and just super emotional.
My breasts were tender but that’s stopped, I haven’t had any sickness at all and no spotting or anything.
I know she said things were okay but I’ve been silly and Googled things and just because I’m feeling a bit hopeless.

Hiya, didn't want to leave this thread with no response. I had a friend that went for an early scan at six weeks and the same thing....just a sac. Her baby is now a healthy 7month old. 😘 I hate feeling anxious and I'm sorry you are feeling like this. Tiredness like that is a really strong symptom so that's good? Xx

lavenderlou · 09/01/2021 16:22

That is still very early days. I had a scan at that gestation due to bleeding and there was only an empty sac visible. 10 days later I had a re-scan which showed a heartbeat.

findinggold · 09/01/2021 16:26

@Milligan85 thank you so much for replying! That’s really reassuring, I’m praying that’s what happens to me now and when I go for my scan next week I’ll have good news but I just can’t help fearing the worst also 😞
I know the anxious feeling just hasn’t left and it’s driving me crazy and I know I shouldn’t be because it’s not good for the baby but I just can’t help it right now at this point, yeah I could just constantly fall asleep at the moment, I do have sensitivity to smell certain smell make me feel sick at the moment and I am peeing a lot but other than that not feeling any other symptoms just feeling deflated and I know this week is going to be the longest, thank you so much x

@lavenderlou ahh that gives me hope! Like I said above I’m praying that when I go now in 8 days I’ll have happy news, this baby is wanted more than anything but I’m just being really pessimistic and I shouldn’t be but just can’t help but have awful thoughts at the moment 😞

Hi OP,

Totally normal to not see anything at that stage as it's so very early, I had a v early scan and saw just a sac and yolk sac and no fetal pole was seen until a week later. It's hard to get accurate measurements so early too, I was put back by a week!

Don't worry about symptoms or lack of, mine didn't kick in until about 6 1/2 - 7 weeks. They tend to come and go every day and can disappear all together for a few days, they're no indication of how the pregnancy is progressing so try not to think about the symptoms.

Mild period like cramps are normal as is spotting but as long as you're not heavily bleeding or in lots of pain and the EPU weren't worried, there is no reason to believe anything is wrong. It's so easy for someone on the internet to tell you not to worry about it but all you can do is wait until your next scan for some reassurance and in the meantime stay away from Google.

It's so easy to find things online to fuel your anxiety!

lillg · 09/01/2021 16:35

I went for a scan at 4 weeks and they saw the sac only, 6 weeks they saw the gestational sack and yolk sac, 7 weeks they got a heartbeat. Do you have a follow up scan booked?

lillg · 09/01/2021 16:37

Sorry - just reread and Seen you do have another scan booked. Try not to worry until then - it's all perfectly normal.

findinggold · 09/01/2021 16:39

@ShalomToYouJackie thank you!
That’s definitely reassuring! Thank you for putting my mind at rest too, I’m glad they found it on the scan for you then the next week, I didn’t have a yolk sac at the time of the scan yesterday, she did say that my bladder wasn’t full enough and it is really early to see anything at the moment but still its just so wondering when you’ve waited for this baby but you are totally right I do have to wait for my scan and stop googling, I’m going to put my phone and laptop in a locked safe for a little while haha, thank you again!

@lillg thank you for the reassurance! I’ll be 7 weeks exactly by the next scan now, I was just hoping that at least 5 weeks and 5 days there would be something in the sac 😞 thank you again, hopefully I’ll have good news when I have the next scan just not thinking positively at the moment at all, thank you again.

Hi,
I am in a very similar situation, I had an ectopic pregnancy earlier this year. Recently found out I was pregnant again! Due to my precious I was referred straight to early pregnancy unit. Had a trans vaginal scan on Friday when I calculated I was 5 weeks and 4 days, the scan showed a bruise in my uterus and a gestation scan of 8.8mm nothing else. The sonogrpaher and consultant didn’t seem worried I had Beta HCG done Friday and back today for a repeat blood test, results tomorrow with a plan of what they think they will do 🤷‍♀️. Anyone had anything similar!?

Mrssmith13 · 10/01/2021 08:22

Just wanna add- pregnancy symptoms on and off nausea, bloating, burping, acid reflux, sore/hard nipples (who said you bloom in pregnancy 😂)

Dream3r · 10/01/2021 10:21

Hi!
Sorry to hear you're going through this.

I had exactly the same thing!

At 5 weeks 2 days I started bleeding bright red when wiping. Only happened the once, and was slightly heavy spotting with how it looked.

I phoned the EPU and they booked me in for the scan the next day. They said they could only see the gestational sack, but nothing inside.
They told me that to class it as a viable pregnancy, they have to be able to see something inside. They marked it as a pregnancy in unknown location.

After the scan, the nurses arranged for me to have 3 HCG blood tests, each over 48 hours.

My bloods didn't double over the course of 3 tests, but each time they rose between 60 & 68%. Due to the rise and the consistent pattern, the nurses were not concerned and neither was my consultant.

After my third blood test, they arranged for me to have another ultrasound the next day, at this stage I was around 5 weeks 6 days.

They could see my baby on the scan and see the heartbeat nice and strong!

I'm only 6 weeks and 4 days now, but I had a private scan on Friday for further reassurance and everything was perfect!!

I'm sure you're just too early. I wish you all the best.

It's a very scary time, especially being in the first trimester. I'm counting down the days until I'm out of it lol, so I can relax just a little xx

Dream3r · 10/01/2021 10:25

Also, I just wanted to add that I have very few pregnancy symptoms so far.

I have slightly sore breasts, and I get some mild abdominal cramping and bloating.

Apart from those, I really don't have any other symptoms.

That used to worry me, as for one, I didn't feel pregnant, and I read up about some sort of risk between miscarriage and no nausea during pregnancy.

Honestly, I just had to stop googling stuff and start thinking positively, as hard as it is.

Try to distract yourself but I know it's hard Thanks

Mrssmith13 · 10/01/2021 14:17

Thank you.
Hopefully things are going in the right direction. My HCG on Friday was 9196 and today 15080. This was after about 46 hours

findinggold · 10/01/2021 14:23

@Dream3r thank you so much for commenting!
That does give me hope! They didn’t take my bloods at all or even offered to do it 😞
I’m so glad they found your little bundle! I was 5 weeks and 5 days when she couldn’t see anything but the gest sac so I dunno what to think, the doctor and the lady who did the scan wasn’t concerned she had a look and then said I’m happy to send you home now if the doctors are and the doctors were too.
You can’t help but feel though that if they didn’t see anything that when I go for my scan next Sunday they’ say the same thing and I am well and truly petrified even though that they said it’s okay and that it’s early and my bladder wasn’t full enough (I was stupid and went for a wee like 10 mins before scan I didn’t think plus I can’t hold it in at the moment haha) but still just how like disheartening it is to be told that isn’t it and just being stupid googling things when I shouldn’t but when it’s your first pregnancy like everything is scary isn’t it?
Thank you so much for the comment though it has made me feel better thank you xx

Hi @findinggold - I was exactly the same as you, a scan at 5 weeks and 5 days, just the gestational sac; tortured myself for about ten days until I had another scan and saw a little heartbeat fluttering away! DD turned one in December Grin

There are no guarantees, and early miscarriage is common. But it's MORE common to go on and have a healthy pregnancy. Try to focus on that. Good luck and congratulations Thanks

findinggold · 10/01/2021 17:52

@RedPandaFluff ahh that does give me hope too thank you!
Yeah that’s what I’m currently doing now just feeling really deflated about it all 😩
Thank you for the message and putting my mind at ease a little! Just hoping for the best but also prepping for the worst, I shouldn’t but this anxiety is something else isn’t it!
Ahh that’s beautiful happy belated 1st birthday to your DD! X

Hi sorry to comment on this, I know it’s a few months old! How are you doing now? I’m in the same position as you with the early scan and only the sac xxx
